I see the EEN is up to it's usual standard, someone gets badly injured by a hit and run driver, and they make a joke of it!

I'm really going to stop reading the EEN site what utter fools on that site.
Dude on bike injured by blind/stupid white van driver and its his fault for not affixing a light to his handle bars. Honestly what planet are these idiots on.

I'm actually quite shocked by the hostility shown to cyclists by the reactions posted on the EN. Some are joking, but others make biased assumptions, presumptions, accusations, generalisations that the cyclist has to be at fault, just for daring to be there!

I am worried by how many of those contributions hold driving licences. They are of course actively encouraged by the editorial line taken by the EEN.

had a nasty run in with a van driver this morning myself. he stopped to let another van out into traffic, making me have to swerve and brake. he decided to remonstrate with me after I gave him a nasty look and subsequent exchange scared my passenger. sometimes i wonder if it is worth it. and why big men like to frighten small children.

I had an article in the EN last year sometime about why I cycle, and questioning why people would dislike me just because I'm on a bike. The Editor at the time was apparently a daily cycle commuter as well (which seemed odd as at the time the editorial line still seemed anti-cyclist). He said he hated having to put a comments section on stories, but it was the heid-honchos who decided on those kind of things.
My article got hidden away in one of the minor sections of the paper and so hardly got any comments.
Occasionally I'll sign in to the comments section and more often than not using the twin forces of common sense and rationality manage to scare away the majority of numpties, or even get some to admit that cyclists aren't actually the danger they're made out to be.
Only when I've got the energy for the long fight however.

It is the nature of comments sections worldwide, as my Nunavut blogging friend noted in his most recent post and many a previous post Only thing worse is 'open-line' radio shows!

Rupert Murdoch might do us all a favour if you have to pay for on-line newspapers/comment sections that should put an end to the EEN on-line surely no one would pay for that keech? I read anth's article which was very reasonable but someone had copied it out of the paper. I once did a count of the nmumber of EEN headlines with the word Fury in them. 63 out of a possible 275 in the year - it seems we are FURIOUS about everything in Edinburgh Evening News LAnd
