Maybe cash will last longer than the loose gravel they normally pour in which lasts about a day?

On my usual commute, patches have appeared at about five of the major holes in the road. Unfortunately while more money than ever might be being spent on tarmac to fill them, it isn't going on quality checks. Some of the repairs are worse than the original holes and the surface so poorly reinstated as to defy belief.

I don't know if this is crazy talk, but surely if they put a layer of rubber up against the drain or manhole cover then the tarmac won't fragment as quickly?

In much the same way as the tarmac against the tram lines has been applied with a rubber buffer bit in between.

My pot hole bug bear is that one on Lothian Road heading south - just before the junction of the western approach road. It's a mother.

The only 'good' thing about that hole is that it encourages you to keep left. It's possibly one of the most cycle unfriendly places in Edinburgh.

Busy, narrow, moderately steep, with large manhole cover - and added pothole.

I think the rubber/mastic idea should be considered by CEC, but....

I don't think filling potholes works. Well if they are filled in after the last frost they will last through til the next season's frost and then the expansion of H20 when frozen will start to do its business And by midwinter the repair is disintegrating. e.g.There is a carwash business at Slateford whose run-off has destroyed the entire green lane. The LAnark Road commute is basically one big pothole apart from the stretches of entirely new surface for the entire road, those bits are lovely and hold up much better. Also in Gorgie/Dalry you have to play a game called dodge the pedestrian as the locals make no distinction between pavement and road. What larks Pip!

    "Pothole work 'cuts off village'"

"residents stranded as work gets under way to repair a road labelled "the dark side of the moon" because it has so many potholes."

"Is this the most potholed road in the Lothians – or do you know one worse? Call Christopher Marshall on 0131-620 8732."

    That's asking for trouble!"

    Gembo,

I wrote a lengthy complaint last summer about the general state of Slateford Rd, including the broken up road in front of the car wash - they said they were going to send an inspector along. I haven't heard anything yet.

Matchstickwarrior - alas nothing appears to have happened. I am all for enterprise etc but I do not understand why the car wash company is able to flood the street with water and soap? the whole layer of green lane is gone. I would naively imagine drainage from the site would be a consideration in allowing it to operate?

Just wondering if anyone has photos of Slateford Road - especially when it was icy.

I have just emailled the council following up the letter they sent to me in the summer when I raised the issue of the carwash, with photos. I was told at the time that the Roads Inspector was to investigate, and since the summer have heard nothing from them.
Hopefully I will get something meaningful back.

All, please see the following response from the council:

    "Hi Mr Shelton
The Roads Officer did carry out some investigative work at the location and determined that the car-wash did not have drainage facilities on-site and were therefore relying solely on the road's surface water drainage for the dispersal of the water. This was established to be overloading the gullies and the detergent-laden water was spilling onto both footway and carriageway and causing the damage you have noted. A number of interim repairs have been carried out between last summer and now.
This department is currently in the process of following statutory procedures to enforce remedial action by the owners of the car wash which may, as there is little evidence of the required work, result in the issuing of
a statutory notice, insisting remedial work be carried out, under the terms of the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984. Failure to comply with this can result in legal action.
Please accept my apologies for the length of time that this issue has been inconvenient to you, but please be assured that this department is strongly pursuing the matter."
