Nothing to do with cycling - though the 'price of Shimano stuff' has apparently been mentioned on other forums.

A journalist friend of mine (former Edinburgh resident) happened to be in Japan at the time and has a film on Channel 4 at 9:00 tonight.

    Preview.

    His blog - worth reading.

It's pretty harrowing viewing, seeing a normal civilised 'first world' society being devastated so quickly and so brutally.

At the risk of sounding trite in the light of this, it is interesting to see the number of bicycles that appeared in use in the post-apocalypse footage. It's a reminder again what an amazing invention it is, and how - when cars are unusable due to the devastation - the bicycle is still functioning as intended.

The most moving thing was seeing the remaining personal effects being picked up.
Bewildered people in shelters with nowhere to go.
    Roads empty.

On another broadcast they were talking to a fire chief. He had lost many (over 20) of his colleagues. They were swept away whilst trying to close a tsunami flood gate.
He was still working with the rest of his team.
