    Non cycle related -

    Anyone want a slide projector- with several slide holders (whatever they are called)?

    Hi chdot. I'd totally love to read the AtoBs (I have ran out of reading material). Happy to pickup whenever suits you or I'm in the southside for most of the week if a dropoff better...JC.

    I have a set of John Lewis bunk beds to give away free to anyone who can come out to Balerno to take them away. On 15th Aug. Or soon after that. They were pricey when purchased hence them lasting twenty years. I would say they still work fairly well. Wooden with wee wooden ladder to get you up. Less good chest of drawers also free. Sorry to hi-Jack this thread.

    Not cycling related. Two items to give away:

    A big roll of foam carpet underlay, 10mm thick, 135cm wide. Approximately 4 or 5 metres in the roll. Unused, surplus to requirements after laying carpets. Comes in a big tough polythene sleeve.

    Unused cooker / oven wall switch - used for switching electric cooking devices on and off at the mains. With red light above switch. Was bought from B&Q a few years ago when planning a kitchen renovation, subsequently mislaid and now found, completely unused.

    Pick up from Abbeyhill area.

    Anybody got any dynamos they're not using?

    When nephew was over this summer we spent time damming the local stream and have set ourselves the challenge of installing a home-brew hydroelectric station. As you do.

    @IWRATS Hub or bottle?

    @IWRATS you'll be annoyed to hear that we took the (perfectly functional) motor from our electric lawnmower to the tip last week. The main bearing in the mower had seized, even though the motor was fine. No way to remove and repair it that I could see.

    Anyway, can you not use a motor as a dynamo?

    @wingpig

    Either, hub would be ideal for overshot waterwheel design, but it is a scrapheap challenge.

    @Greenroofer

    Hadn't thought of that.

    I've been trying to access the main bearing on our mower half-heartedly for years now, bound to be the point of failure...designed to be the point of failure indeed.

    @IWRATS - I just threw an old cordless hammer-drill out - I think the motor was probably fine - I think that might also work if you removed some of the circuitry - I'll see what else I have. What I do have is a functioning alternator with broken voltage regulator - I could try and resurrect that - it'd give you 14.4 volts given the correct exciter signal (and is rated to 120A amps I think - only really relevant if you're planning on using an inverter).

    I think alternators and AC motors from lawnmowers, (most) washing machines etc, are tricky to work as generators. They use electromagnets to convert electricity to motion, you really need a permanent magnet set up for the kind of output you'd get from a scrapheap challenge.

    A small motor from a drill would work for a low current output, you'd need to get a small motor turning very fast to get a good output. Also look out for stepper motors, they'll work but they generate an AC output of various frequencies, depending on turn rate, and will need a bridge rectifier (which is easy made from 4 diodes of which I have ample).

    @steveo - not sure I understand why you say alternators wouldn't work - you'd need a 12V battery to provide an exciter signal for an alternator but it would work fine as a generator (indeed it is essentially just a generator with the magnetic field spinning rather than static and then some rectifiers and voltage regulator).

    Hmmmm. Given the placement of the hydroelectric scheme in question and the amount of 25mm pipe we have I think we can get a head of two metres at most so not a huge amount of energy. That's why I thought dynamo, but a small motor with a permanent magnet might just do it....

    The idea is to put a string of LED lights in a remote pine tree and let the locals make up their own fairy stories.

    @algo, it doesn't work as a stand alone generator as you say you need something to power the coils in the EM, given the lack of drop available to IWRATS by the time you got enough power for the coils you'd have nothing left. IC engines have a lot of power going spare so can "waste" some, IWRATS probably has a few hundred raw watts from the hydro and an effeciency rating that would make a steam train wince.

    @IWRATS sounds like a cool idea.

    How much are you selling the Helios for? I don't see a mention of price on your site.

    Still deciding what the market will bear with our devalued money!

    Offers over £1500 I think as it isn't that common a version of the Helios and has lights F+R, nice ergo grips too. Been looked after.

    A new Helios costs £1500 but that hasn't got disc brake front, hub lighting, rack, kickstand and Alfine 11.

    Can pay up over two months as hire / buy.

    Thanks, I'm certainly tempted by it but will need some serious consideration as we already have 3 mores bikes than we have storage space for.

    Out of interest how heavy is a helios?

    Around 18kg for this one - with pedals, rack, kickstand etc.
    Light enough / short enough to hang from front wheel vertically at shop.

    you'd need to get a small motor turning very fast to get a good output.

    A broken Dremel then? Has a small motor that turns at a very fast rate of revs. Perhaps drop the Tool Library a line, they get donations of stuff all the time and might have a steady supply of stuff wth working parts that ends up in the bin as non-repairable.

    Thats a good shout though a bigger drill motor would be better more torques need less revs to get usable power.

    Cateye Strada Wireless Cycling Computer/Odo

    Found whilst searching for other stuff I still can't find

    Was def working when I took it off my MTB (pre-Garmim days). Will probably need a couple of batteries in the unit and the fork mounted sensor.

    It's this one - just not as shiny

    Cost : a few coffees @ not PT.

    Garmin Forerunner 405HR GPS Speed & Distance Watch with Heart Rate Monitor and ANT Data Transfer

    Also found whilst looking for stuff I still cant find

    Was working when I stopped using it - I stopped using it as I couldn't get on with it. Great idea, poorly executed I think.

    It's this one - just older

    Cost : open to suggestions (if its working), probably coffees @ not PY.
