    @bax, mibbes aye, mibbes naw.

I was telling him. recently about a book that won the McVities Prize many years ago by David Thomson. I did not quite get the title right plus could only remember one fact about a town being swallowed by the beach. What I did remember was David Thomson’s acceptance speech. He said that he was particularly happy that he had won a prize from McVities as when he was young he had very poor vision but no specs. He used to be able to see the blackboard by looking at it through the holes in a McVities Rich Tea biscuit.

Hi would anyone have any bullhorn handlebars I could try out on the front of my mtb? Most recent batch of weird bars Unhurt brought me too short to attach regular brakes on, and switching to drop bar stuff would be the half the cost of a new bike!

Have two bullhorns but both attached to bikes (Zenit brand - highly recommended) so you'd have to unwind the tape, remove the brake levers, remove the wee splodges of Sugru improving the grip, remove the cable conduit etc. then replace it all as it was so it would be easier to borrow the bike. I have a spare set of On-One "mungo" amongst the loft's mysteries:

Oh thank you but don't want to put you (or me) to all that trouble - brand good to know! Looked at some mungo's and a mary but the straight bit isn't long enough. Might get a 'geoff' (eg a Jones rip off)...

    Scott Contesa 14"

one moderately careful owner. Still have the stabilisers if needed.

Far far too much new, 50quid is a steal.

Would suit the diminutive rider looking for that sweet-spot XC/gravel/SS/city/bikepacking crossover .... or 3-4 year old.

    Left overs from the cdf

1 partially worn 9 speed cassette
1 partially worn 9 speed chain
1 mechanical disc caliper (trp spyre) needs a bit of a clean but fine otherwise
1 pair of new in box pads for the above
1 Alivio 9 speed rear mech (needs a (good) clean)

I will also have an octalink chainset and bb if anyone can lend me a crank puller for same.

Any of the above free for taking. (I know its a great selection)

@steveo, If you still have the spyre I would be interested in it. I recently changed my front from the Hy/rd to a spyre and eventually plan to do the same to the rear.

Sorry mate its been spoken for. I've still got the front but it's sticky as hell and welded to its mount.

@acsimpson I have a barely used Spyre in my attic you can have. I went the other way on the front, from Spyre to Hy/Rd. Interested to hear your thinking...

@Murun, If it's carefully stored then there's no rush but if you are in the attic sometime then yes please.

My slightly rambling thoughts on the comparisons are:

I found the Hy/Rds to be a great brake but my double tap levers never seemed to have enough pull on them so frequently hit the bars. I tried having them bleed and changing to compressionless cables housing but nothing seemed to work. I had them adjusted so that I could only just force the locking pin into place so had a niggling concern about another forum member's tale of sudden failure. They stopped the bike though so I used them until they wore out.

So far the spyre's appear to have a slower initial bite but I'm not experiencing the same lever/bar issues with them. They are still on the factory pads so it's possible that once I swap to my preferred nuke-proof ones the initial bite will improve.

I would guess I managed about 20,000Km on the Hy/rds and so a bit less than 1,000Km on the spyres so it's early days yet.

Interestingly I've noticed that I am using a more balanced approach to braking with the spyre. With the Hy/Rd I was very front heavy. I suspect that is because of the initial bite being weaker, but it also means that the rear caliper is still in good condition.

The original brakes which came with the bike were BB5s. I wouldn't wish them on anyone, after almost every ride I would have to adjust which wasn't an easy task.

Interesting, my issue with the Spyres were to do with the amount of lever travel required as well as 'bite', resulting in no end of cable tinkering to try to improve matters. This culminated in a front brake failure on Dundas St one day, probably as a result of having shortened the cable so much as pads wore. Thinking back, some of it was due to not RTFM as I didn't realise how often the adjustment screws on the sides needed wound in to account for pad wear. Anyway, I have been Hy/Rd on the front and Spyre on the back ever since on that bike, though the Hy/Rds also have excess lever throw problems IMO...

Anyway, I'll pm you my details and you can pick up at your convenience if you want the Spyre unit

Who needs a 29er disc compatible rear rack? I have a very gently used one that wouldn't fit the Longitude - attachy things (technical term) too short for geometry so could never get it 100% level. Free to a caring home.

Do racks have to be level? Most of mine have had to be canted a bit rearwards beyond horizontal to allow heel-room or space for a child to not be smothered by a bag.

Sold to the man with the long ponytail.

@wingpig this was very, very much not level and annoyed me every time I looked at the bike...

Does anyone have a spare cantilever brake claw-thing that joins the main cable to the inter-brake arm strappy cable?

A yoke! That's it. A cantilever brake yoke.
