"Bike to school day today. 231 bikes in playground."

That must be more than 1/3.

    Wonder how many teachers...

Sciennes is probably the most consistent school in Edinburgh for encouraging cycling - been doing it for over 12 years.

STILL one of the few (Edinburgh) schools that does Cycling Training in school time AND for all (P6) pupils.

I used to work there, walking out of the school was an assault course when they had the cycle proficiency training on!
One of my favourite schools of all time mainly down to the staff always offering me a cuppa and the place having a pool!

I thought I saw an unusually high number of child cyclists this morning!

    Don't worry, it's only once a year...

chdot - My son is at Sciennes, and they also wanted Teachers, and Parents to bring their bikes this morning (they got extra points for their 'House' and that includes the teachers who are all allocated toa house in their year - so a fair few of them did cycle as well) - it was a bit of a scrum, we got there early to get somewher to chain his wee bike but great to see !!

FYI, there are in excess of 600 kids at sciennes - biggest roll of a primary in Edinburgh.

p.s. Agree with Spytefear - I always hated school but Sciennes has a great vibe - I wouldnt want him anywhere else.

chdot - Dean Park in Balerno does the Cycle Training for all P6 in school time but it will never get 231 bikes in the playground alas. Balerno Bike Day did pull in £250 in second hand bike sales tho.

    Great!

    It's still unusual.

James Gillespies does it in P5, 8 weeks of guidance, in school time

    Morningside does it school time.

    A pattern is emerging...

Oxgangs does P6 cycle training in school time too.

Younger children are led on "traffic trails" to highlight hazards and safe routes they can use to walk or cycle to school.

Depends on interested staff members though, who could probably use some more praise and support.

Before the PPP re-build there used to be playground junction markings for off-road training. Do any schools still have these?
