  1. A number of years back I wrote a piece called 'The Joy of Fix' (I was stupidly pleased with that title). But I have to say, whenever I go back to gears there is a lot to be said for them...

With the Peacemaker retired, and two bikes waiting to be built up, I've decided just to commute on the Kaffenback for the near future (probably till winter). I forget how smooth and easily that bike runs, and that feeling in the warm air to hit a downhill and just float down it. This weekend it's going to get a stripdown and some TLC, there will be new cables all-round, new bar tape, and possibly some new CX tyres (the Pasela on the rear is wearing a bit thin and I fancy having something a little wider on). One thing I definitely need to do is take the moustache bars off the PM and stick them on the Kaff - the drops are loooovely Nitto wonderfulness, but the position is aggravating my bad arm. Not a problem on a one-off weekend ride, but an each-and-every day commute whittles away at it.

    Oh no! Function over fashion!

  3. Ah now, fixed was never about fashion for me. I know I got matching components and colours and the like, but then I do that on my geared bikes. It's still a fantastic way to build fitness (certainly in my case) and in the winter there's less to clag up if you're a lazy bike-cleaner (certainly in my case).

Having just replaced the chain, cassette on both my geared bikes and the bb and chainset on the roadie i've decided to build up a cheap single speed. Its as much for the fitness aspect as it is for the cheap replacement parts come next winter.
