  1. Okay, not cycling, but you could cycle to it...

Outdoor screening of Local Hero to highlight the plight of the Odeon and the threatened demolition.

I saw some great acts here, as well as films...it will be a sad day but how am I not surprised? It should be a listed building as should other examples of classic 30's design.

I've always wanted to see that film. I might just do this if it aint raining. And yes, cycle there.

It should be a listed building

It is and sadly the "developer" seems to be doing the classic trick of let the elements and the damp and neglect take its toll on the structure, blocking other more enterprising attempts to make use of it and dragging their heels on any progress until it comes to the point that they get their own way.

But then again, that's just my ill-informed opinion :)

Plus "accidentally" leaving the back door unlocked so that vandals can get in and set it on fire.

    Allegedly.

    Interesting -

"Opponents of the scheme have now been told by city planning chiefs that the legal agreement was never progressed and therefore there is no consent in place.

They don't always get their own way. Many moons ago, and not very far from the Odeon, a "developer" torched a block but the court made him rebuild in as near to existing style as could be managed.

Glasgow Odeon/Paramount being demolished. I went past it this morning. It shut in 2007. Looks like they are keeping the front.

The Glasgow Odeon is B-listed so yes, the facade should be safe. Still a shame such lovely cinemas aren't in use. I have fond memories of Star Wars triple-headers at the Edinburgh Odeon, and saw Episode IV there when it was literally a blockbuster, with the queue right round the block.

The facade of the Ascot at Anniesland was retained when it was turned into flats but the flats are visible from the front of the building so it might comply with the letter of the law but it looks quite odd. I'm glad they kept it but it could have been handled better. I would not be altogether surprised if a mystery fire were to occur at the Paramount which meant that the facade had to be demolished.

I'll send some photos to this web page later, I haven't got the iPad camera kit with me.

Some flicker photos of the Paramount.

You're not the only one who wondered about the possibility of a fire, or a slip of the hand when using a demolishing ball, but the latter might come with a mandatory fine I suppose, whereas the former would need to be proven to be deliberate.

Some of our old cinemas are amongst the most attractive buildings and everything possible should be done to save them in as close to tip-top condition possible.

I've never been in the Paramount but seeing those demolition photographs still makes me sad.

Sad but interesting because you can see how it was put together. I wonder how they will get that huge girder out.

It had a refurb in 1970 and Louie signed the girder.

CAMPAIGNERS are fighting to halt the latest plans to demolish part of the old Odeon cinema on Clerk Street.

The building’s owner, Duddingston House Properties (DHP), is set to begin taking apart the former fly tower, once used to hoist scenery, on
Monday.

The move follows planning permission being granted to develop student flats to the rear of the derelict building. However, campaigners say that the permission was based on the front of the building being kept for entertainment purposes and, after the failure of the short-lived venue run by Susan Boyle’s brother Gerry, there are now new fears for the future of the whole site.

I was in the brilliant curry house across the road from the odeon last night Tanjore. Next to the greatest of all Indian restaurNts Kalpna, especially if you are veggie. Like me. Also took eldest daughter past the grosvenor in ashton lane last week in Glasgow and she was impressed. Hopefully G1 will behave.

As to my night out at the tanjore it had been hijacked so much by social work colleagues that I missed the 9.26pm train to curriehill and cycled home at 11pm through the bandaged mummies. I was in shirt sleeves as it was quite balmy

Was that thread drift or sabotage?

It was sabotage by the social workers, gate crashing my night out then trying to dictate where we went. Ended up in truly awful pub called the dog. Full of fake spider web and bar staff with zero banter. DJ good. I was drinking appleton's rum on All Hallows' Eve's eve. The appleton sisters Natalie and Nicole were in the band all saints. Tomorrow is all saints day

None of this impressed the kids.

That sounds like good news. Presumably the 'new' 400 seat screen will turn out to be what used to be Screen 1, and the two 'new' 140 seat screens will be what used to be Screens 2 and 3 directly below it, but will the 50 seat screen be a genuinely new space? The extension to the rear which housed Screens 4 and 5 has now been demolished.

Nelly, did you shake robert halpern's hand? If so I fear you may have been mesmerised for life? Do you get a wee voice saying Take your bike to work? Or this raw onion tastes nice?

I was never picked - my hands didnt "stick together", thankfully !

Raw onions as apples and young drunks dancing in their underwear - RH knew his audience, eh??

I am unconvinced that RH stage show was in any way ethical by todays standards, but in the mid eighties it was all good clean fun (or not as subsequent court cases may have shown).

Nelly we had a hypnotist at our cinema in Balerno. Same tactic of being able to listen in to conversations without people spotting it, told a woman what her dog's name was and that she had a cheese scone for lunch. All very clever. He works with dereen brown. I imagine everyone signs big disclaimers now. And no one has had a few pints before then gone along wanting to be hypnotised then sought compensation afterwards.
