    [pride on]
Last week I managed to convince my eldest son that he didn't need stableisers on his bike. He was wanting suspension forks (like mine) and told him that they would not work whilst his bike had stableisers on. As he's been riding a wooden balance bike for a few years now it wasn't hard to get him to peddle whilst balancing. Its been a week now and he can turn, start, stop and is now even peddling whilst standing up. All this at 4.25 years old [/pride off]

    :-)

just need to find suspension for a 14 inch wheel bike...

I can feel the fatherly pride glowing from the screen. My youngest started at about that age. It's a funny moment when you realise that they're not not falling over but actually cycling.

It's a lovely moment. Their first step towards independence! My wee lad has had the stabilisers off since his third birthday, every time I see him riding I'm overcome with the aforementioned fatherly pride. Here's a wee video of him riding in our local park. He's 4 next week. I can't wait till he's older and we can go out on longer rides together...

mines now 14, we regularly head up to muiravonside country park and look at the car park that started it all. Its that look as they turn to speak to you and they realise that they have been doing it themselves for 10 feet ! Mine wants us to do the pedal for scotland this year so thats a step init right direction !

My youngest is up and away (steering not her forte), following advice on this very forum I didn't bother with stabilisers. The bike we used has fairly fat tyres and can be ridden by a 6 year old and also by her dad. Quite a versatile velocipede.

effemm: He rides like someone three times his age. My girls are reluctant to even get out the saddle.

Number 3 son cracked it this morning. Yesterday he fell in a large mud hole in the park. I told him to dodge the mud so he aimed straight for it. in the afternoon he had another go but wasn't quite there. At 0900 this morning he was out in the street making more noise than the neighbours wanted to hear. Now he loves it and asked why I never told him cycling was so much fun.

Need to replace the gear cable outer I stole from the re-cycled kid's bike in the garage.

One more boy to go. Might need to get a bike rack for the car.

Wow Effemm, that video is great. Your son is very competent on his bike.

We cycled part of the Dunfermline - Alloa cycle path yesterday, 6miles. Seeing your video, I'll have to get Camie out of road now!

Cyclingmollie: His sister - three years older and off the stabilisers on exactly the same day a year ago - is much more cautious and also reluctant to stand up.

Not sure whether it's a boy/girl thing, a first/second child thing, or just that he's obsessed. He adopted his sister's "one careful lady owner" balance bike when he was 2, and never looked back.

Dave: It's the offroad stuff that attracts him. On the cycle path, progress is slow because he's always off in the verges, exploring and looking for bumps...

My eldest is also quite enthusiastic and picked up stabilizer-free cycling at 3.5, but have not tried her off road. Must do it before she decides it is scary! She does like to stand up and pedal on the tagalong though!
