As the title says, if one was to pick up an older basic Brompton, is it possible to upgrade it at a later date?

    Yes.

(Though it depends what you want to do.)

Yes, it does depend what you want. The older 3spds for example can be updated to 6spd if the right-hand chainstay has the little braze-on underneath. Or you might find a 2004ish 6spd with the Sram hub and upgrade it with a new rear wheel with the Brompton Wide Range 3spd hub. Or get Kinetics to do you a 8spd or Rohloff conversion... Lots of possibilities.

Maybe also pick up a copy of David Henshaw's book for research purposes, or join the BromptonTalk group on Yahoo.
