Meanwhile, in Portland, they've decided that the 2011 World Naked Bike Ride is to be held on June 18th. And now some bright spark, obviously fed up with annual exhortations to ride in the buff, has organised...wait for it...the First Annual World Clothed Bike Ride.

"Are you tired of all the pressure to ride bikes naked? Are you sick of seeing the jiggly bits of people who don't ride bikes otherwise?

Then this ride is for you!

This will be a celebration of our right to wear clothes (multiple layers even!) while going on a fabulous bike ride! Costumes and sarcasm encouraged. Don't mope alone during WNBR this year!"

There's apparently a page on social network central about it. But I'm not a member so I can't read it. Perhaps Edinburgh can take part after all, with hundreds of actually-not-naked-at-all cyclists protesting about environmental vulnerability and things.

Cyclingwise, Portland is the Copenhagen of the U.S. (just hillier, rainier, colder, and with fewer cyclists), so I'm not surprised they have the wherewithal for clothing-discretionary sports.

But a WNBR in Edinburgh? Somehow doesn't seem in keeping with the tenor of the city. Unless, of course, underneath all that literate gentility, the City that Holds My Heart hides a randy skirt.

    Quite.

Shellsuit? No no, you're confusing Edinburgh with Easterhouse...

World fur coat and no knickers (or trams come to that) surely!

A place perhaps better-suited to a naked theme would be Newcastle, though despite its night-time reputation for absence of coats in men and minimal coverage of women the turnout for the Spencer Tunick thing a few years back was relatively low.

Having a naked ride event during the daytime in the summer is perhaps a problem, particularly amongst the fair-skinned of the north when there's a distinct risk of sunburn. If it was at night in the spring or autumn there'd be less of a problem with sunburn (and the visibility of nakedness for those whom it might offend) and some impetus to ride at a decent speed in order to keep the body temperature up.

wingpig, you could just ride up and down the St. leonards tunnel in your pants to keep the sun and heat off?

"The Portsmouth leg of the World Naked Bike Ride will take place this Thursday after the city council insisted it was a police matter after it received a petition signed by 1,500 locals seeking to stop the ride."
