Anyone else get a b&w leaflet delivered advertising a 'fundraiser' sat 23 april? it says 'come along for a fun family day out and help us raise funds for our local youth group'. it then lists a bunch of activities like easter egg hunt, manicures, massages etc.

But no mention of who is organizing it - just the address 51 spylaw road...which just happens to be the local branch of the latter day saints (Mormons). thought I had seen a couple of missionaries on the street, but this strikes me as inappropriate!

Anyway, I know we all have differing views on religion, and don't really want to start a row, but just thought this was a bit OTT. I don't believe in proselytizing, but I always thought that if you did it, you admitted to what you were doing - otherwise isn't it a cult?

(conflict of interest notice: I do belong to an organised religion and my professional life involves working with them).

Ha!! Yeah I saw those to men in black type guys yesterday! Suits and briefcases and a handfull of leaflets. I was welding on the van. They walked past me then stopped and turned towards me as I donned the welding mask and started the grinder....they quickly turned on their heels.... I say we get a posse together and attend this "fundraiser"...................then again maybe not eh?

I used to get regular visits off the suits from JC&LDS when I was in halls at University (although the uni would chase them out if they found them). I used to offer them a browse through some of the evolution textbooks on my shelf in return (I wasn't going to read them!). They stopped bothering me.

I've noticed "trypraying.co.uk" adverts on the side of Lothian Buses this week. I wonder if churches have "trythebus" adverts in them.

I got a rather cheap newsprint leaflet that looked of the quality of home shopping channel marketing about why I should believe a certain imprint of the bible through my door the other day. The leaflet was printed in the US it said if I was interested I could "write them" at a US address to find out more about their take on their imprint of the bible, sending a certain amount of money their way. It went in the recycling. What a waste (of paper, my time, their time, everyone's time).

Morningside Baptist church used to post me mail regularly (must have got name and address off of electrical roll). I sent it return to sender with "no more religious propaganda please" written on it. Never bothered me again.

The Socialists keep putting their newsletter through my door. I was going to send them back but then realised they're perfect for storing up and then putting dirty / wet boots on (their newsletter, not the socialists)

The next meeting of the Edinburgh Eco-Congregation network will take place on 11 April, 7.30pm at Christ Church Morningside, Morningside Road. The focus will be on Green(er) Ways of Transport. While we will have presentations from some experts on the topic, including a representative from SPOKES, we are also very keen to hear from you! Does your congregation support sustainable ways of transport? The meeting will give your an opportunity to share examples of experiences you have had and to learn from others. There will also be opportunities to share news from your congregations. As always, all are welcome to attend, you don’t need to be an eco-congregation to come along!

I'm not pro or anti church. Got better things to worry about. Like cycling. But it's a good place to encourage cycling to.

But it's a good place to encourage cycling to. i know a lot of people who would disagree with that (and for good reasons!), but maybe we can all agree that it is good to encourage cycling to everywhere!

It has been noted that very few people drive to the mosque down the street as well.

What I was meaning was that if one must go then it's better to cycle there than drive. However I think as you say we can all agree that's it's better cycling almost anywhere than driving, whether or not it's a church or a mosque or Tesco. Shopping seems to be a religion to a lot of people.

I thought I was against evangelism until I got into cycling :)

    I've toyed with this religion:

even though I am an ordained minister in the Church of the Latter Day Dude and was formerly a Pastafarian.

A long, long time ago I went to RC school but one day I was sitting on a bike at a traffic light in Chelsea and decided not to do RC anymore.

Some Amish are not allowed to cycle, they use big scooters.

We used to get the Mormons coming to the door of the staffed group home I worked at in Glenrothes. If I answered the door I would point out that I didn't live there but that I would get someone who did. One of the guys was great at saying odd things when he was confused. So when he was asked "have you accepted the lord Jesus Christ as your saviour?" he'd reply "big wet fish" or "combine harvester". This would go on for a minute or two until they left.

There are more of us around than you might imagine Rev Foldy, I keep meaning to send off for my certificate and patch so I can add it to one of my bags and confuse the un-dudely :)
@PS, just hang loose Dude, sin is what you believe it to be man.

I like to recall the Billy Connolly tale. When answering the door to Jehova's Witnesses he shouts through the door 'I am naked and will open the door in 10 seconds!, ONE, TWO, THREE....' then hears them running away.
