    This looks interesting:

Ever wondered just how fit you really are? At this year's Science Festival, PhD student Catherine Hesford, from the University of Essex, will be on hand to help you find out.

As part of her research, Catherine has organised Shining Light on Exercise, an event which will invite adults and children to measure their fitness using the Wingate Test.

Participants will cycle for 30 seconds as fast as they can on a stationary bike, against a level of resistance in proportion to their mass. The experiment will measure the cyclist's heart rate and the level of oxygen in their muscles, with the results being shown in real time on a laptop computer.

You can find out more about Catherine's studies and her trip to Edinburgh on her blog: scifestfitnesstest.blogspot.com.

She will be looking for volunteers on the fourth floor of the City Art Centre from 11-16 and 18-19 April. The test will be open from 10am-4pm.

Of course I'm now working in an entirely unsuitable spot to pop along. :(

Hmm. Off on the 19th. Might trundle over.

@anth You can only get away with saying that because Johnston Terrace is closed at the moment.

Man, we could so all go individually en masse and really screw up the averages.
