    Bruce Gordon with his trusty Bacchetta Corsa recumbent bike is taking on the Guiness World Record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the world by bike.

    http://globebent.blogspot.com/ for day-by-day updates;
    http://www.globebent.org for the lowdown.

    Steve Strange set the bar at 276 days.
    Mark Beaumont's epic ride was 194 days.
    James Bowthorpe cut it down to 176 days.
    Julian Sayarers then managed it in 175 days.
    Vin Cox set the current record at 163 days.
    Alan Bate with a support crew managed it in just 113 days, but it wasn't GWR approved.

    Bruce is aiming to cover upwards of 200km per day and make it right the way around the world in about 145 days.

    He's done a map of his proposed route, too, stopping by in Southampton before crossing west to NY.

    A question that I've never understood - it's 40,000km around the equator. Clearly you'd have to hop the pacific and atlantic, but many "round the world" bike rides seem to involve a really large amount of flying.

    Shouldn't they at least ride the longest *possible* route (until someone creates an amphibious bike!)?

    Mark Beaumont spent quite a time in Asia, including Pakistan and India. This route zigzags through Europe, jumps to Australia and NZ and then through US/Canada.

    Presumably you have to do a set mileage, always going East and cross the Equator at some point.

    "the journey should be continuous and in one direction (East to West or West to East), that the minimum distance ridden should be 18,000 miles, and that the total distance travelled by the bicyle and rider should exceed an Equator's length, i.e. 24,900 miles." They also state that: "Any considerable distance travelled opposite to the direction of the attempt must be discounted from any calculations of the overall distance travelled," and that the route "must be ridden through two approximate antipodal points."

    "Julian Sayarers then managed it in 175 days."

    He sounds like a nice chap. Read para 5 onwards on his blog:

    If you have better things to do (and you have) it can be summarised as "I cycle because I hate everyone, blaaaahhhh".
