Perhaps for Monday - not sure if we are staying over in Fife. Friday is day off cycling before the sportive.

Yeah Monday would be better for me, give me a chance to evaluate how much decorating i've got done over the weekend.

Let's do Monday then! Anyone got any preferences as to directions? I fancied going somewhere near the sea.

    Monday looks promising -

The only problem with the coast is that the wind 'always' changes direction when you get there!

You mean Culross I think? I was thinking staying this side of the Forth. Better beaches.

Interesting wind direction for heading to Falko's in Gullane for bun (very dear). A fair distance from Balerno but too close for you Southsiders? I have never been to Blackness Castle - do-able on Cycle Track from Queensferry - was out that way once and locals having BBQ right in middle of cycle track - nice.

    Good potential destination.

"I have never been to Blackness Castle"

    I have.

    Many years ago.

More recently did Blackness to Bo'ness along the coast - which CycleStreets doesn't seem to know about. Perhaps because it's 'a bit rough'.

    Not even on OSM!

Haymarket to Blackness - CycleStreets - but via Dalmeny would be an option.

OS mapping here (top website, by the way)...
    http://uslot.com/NewBingTestPage.html
...shows route 76 going halfway between the two then stopping?!

Some pictures of that bit of path, here:

(Edit: you need Microsoft Silverlight for that OS map website by the way, but it really is worth it)

I seem to have installed it last year - but don't think I've used it before! Nice maps!

Yes, doesn't show the rockier bits!

Anyone been through Wester Shore Wood between Abercorn and Blackness?

Great site cb, saves having to use bing maps :)

The first time I did round the forth on my horrid old hybrid bike, I went right down to Blackness and then along the shore. I ended up pushing / carrying the bike most of the way, which was a shame as it would make a delightful shorefront cycle.

"I ended up pushing / carrying the bike most of the way,"

I don't remembering it being that bad - progress was slow though. It was a few years ago and is so close to the water that it must be susceptible to flood damage.

"which was a shame as it would make a delightful shorefront cycle."

    Definitely!

I'd go but don't think I can make Monday.
Family is in post show rebellion - plans are being made.

They want to get away from bikes... !

Back OT. How about riding down the Roseburn to Granton, along the foreshore to Cramond, Cramond to S. Queensferry, to Hopetoun, to Blackness and then some way back to Edinburgh on the back roads possibly old railway line to Newbridge?

    "Back OT."

I was - just 'exploring' options to Blackness.

Think I want to carry on to Bo'ness, but understand if others don't.

    "may need to dive off"

Well not likely to be 'too far' from Edinburgh at any point.

    Set off 11 OK??

There was a CTC ride on some of tomorrow's likely route today -

    "
We went to Blackness on the new path via Abercorn church, for the most part wonderful if not a bit new...but there were about three areas where the rain has washed away the path cutting a pretty deep culvert right across.
    "

This has put me off my previous plan -

    "
Also the coastal path from Blackness to Bo'ness has taken a real hammering in places, with the sea wall having been washed away and huge boulders to negotiate

I prefer the tarmac. Have fun!

Ruggtomcat - a kind of mixed route - tarmac/cycle path/path that your old tricross should cope with [maybe you sold it when you went recumbent?].

I am aiming at whole family cycle of a more modest distance this a.m. We are all somewhat burnt by Pentlands Easter Egg rolling yesterday, so shade of the WoL path is looking good.
