A tragic start to what seemed to be a lovely spring morning;
Cyclist dies after being hit by truck outside primary school
The 25-year-old man was hit by the vehicle on Broughton Road in Edinburgh on Thursday morning
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 16years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Cyclist dies after being hit by truck outside primary school
The 25-year-old man was hit by the vehicle on Broughton Road in Edinburgh on Thursday morning
I've just had a thought that I cycled up that way yesterday evening after paying TBC a visit, at this corner if you are heading up the hill there are some temorary traffic lights and a "when red light shows wait here" sign - both of which were sitting on the cycle lane.
It is very hard to tell where it is since the article claims both Broughton Road and Broughton Street. There is a primary school in Broughton Street and I suspect this is where is was since it is a very dangerous spot for vehicles barging left into East Claremont Street regardless of any cyclists that might be there.
Poor man.
Geography in news story is confused.
I suspect it was here (I complained to council about it the other day).
How very sad.
yes that's what I was on about. Muppetry of the highest order, blocking both the cycle lane, the left turn into East Claremont and the pedestrian crossing. I'm not sure if the left turn is suspended (can't see a sign in your photo, chdot) but if it's not then that layout effectively obliges cars to sideswipe cyclists from the wrong lane if they wan't to make a turn.
Or perhaps it really means Broughton Road - outside Broughton Primary - where most traffic is diverted left and I cycled straight on on Tuesday...
"I'm not sure if the left turn is suspended"
Nope that's the official diversion.
I cycled down McDonald Road and across Broughton Road into St Mark's Park this morning at 0845. Looking back over my shoulder, I saw Broughton Road was closed with large mount of emergency people at the junction of Broughton Road and East Claremont Street. So I presume that is the location of the incident.
I think Broughton Street is Bellevue by the point it has the intersection with East Claremont in that photo. And I also think the school is now shut there (correct me if I'm wrong on either point).
In which case it would be Broughton Primary at Broughton Road, which Riffian's observation would corroborate.
Still, doesn't excuse that criminally stupid temporary traffic lights.
That sign is by B Primary (open).
Better story (with distressing photo) here -

And with the slightly unnecessary sub-headline: "Traffic diversions in place as investigation into cyclist's death get underway"
Man, that sucks. I don't think I know anyone with that route (it's not so far from the Bike Chain, right?)
It's not so long since the last one either (AFAICR the outcome of which is still not known, I think there was a discussion here some time back with little conclusion).
At least in London these things seem to be quite public and relatively well examined. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear nothing more (after the obligatory update naming the deceased and some sympathetic quotes).
Those lights are dire.
That's terrible .....
The police say "The truck turned left" - now there's a surprise.
“We are appealing to any road users who were in the area at the time who may be able to help us establish the movements of vehicles and the cyclist. The truck turned left, was the cyclist intending to turn as well?”
Until they have any definite idea, especially when they're requesting any eyewitness accounts, why add that suggestion at the end?
The junction of Broughton Road and East Claremont Street has recently been redone with a new pedestrian crossing and the barriers seperating pavement from the Road - which are visible in the STV photo and chdot's above.
barriers seperating pavement from the Road
I thought there was meant to be some sort of programme to remove barriers to avoid cyclists being crushed against them? Or was I dreaming that?
"Well on the plus side, CEC is trying to remove pedestrian railings."
Not sure if that's where I heard it or if I've read something on a Council or Spokes internet.
to avoid cyclists being crushed against them
That was my line of speculation at the moment. Without barriers you may have some chance of jumping/diving/falling onto the pavement in the event of a cut-up by a left turning vehicle.
Could I just take a moment of everyones time to remind everyone that this is someones Son, Brother or Father.
The relatives may go hunting for news of this incident online and find this public site. It would be very destressing for them if to see everyone attempting to second guess what the exact circumstances of this very sad incident are.
Could I very politly ask everyone not to make any uninformed comments on the circumstance of this particular incident, which resulted in the very sad loss of a young cyclist.
I have personal experience of this. I'm a diver, and I have friends who have died through diving. Relatives do come on these forums and post their feelings about their lost loved ones. I would not want to see any more hurt or anquish caused to the friends and relatives of this young man through comments on here.
Kindest regards,
Dave C
"Could I very politly ask everyone not to make any uninformed comments on the circumstance of this particular incident, which resulted in the very sad loss of a young cyclist."
I think that is reasonable advice.
At present the circumstances - beyond location and vehicle involved - are unclear.
Barriers and diversion arrangements may or may not have been a factor.
Barriers and lorries are well known issues for cyclists and have been discussed on other threads previously.
Sad News and very close to home.
Just to confirm that the photo on chdot's link is the junction between Broughton Road and East Claremont St.
Trying to stick to facts, rather than speculation as to what happended today:
Parents of pupils at Broughton Primary School have long campaigned for changes to the roads around there. That junction was a problem as the entrance to East Claremont Street is more or less straight on for westbound vehicles on Broughton Road, so they could turn in there without reducing their speed.
The pavement widening work was carried out very recently. I hadn't realised there were railings, as I haven't been down that way for a few weeks. I really don't like railings for a lot of reasons, both safety and aesthetic (if you must have something then bollards are preferable to my mind), but I can see the justification for using them here with the small children/fast cars combination. However, the unintended consequence of pavement extension at the junction is that what used to be a straight-on road now features a left-turn with railings.
In normal circumstances, you shouldn't really get any big vehicles turning into East Claremont Street as it is speed-bumped and the main road takes you via Broughton Road anyway. However, at the moment Scottish Gas is replacing gas mains in Broughton Road so there's a diversion along East Claremont Street.
It seems safe (and inoffensive enough) to suggest caution at this point for the duration of the works, then, as there will be a number of large vehicles turning left across the cycle lane as long as the diversion is in place.
Keep a weather eye open for overtaking vehicles turning across, one death is more than enough!
(It occurred to me after saying that I didn't know anybody who rides this way that I do, but thankfully they are a she - terrible moment though).
Yes I think the inital reports all said "it is thought" about age.
It's not me, though I have ridden that way on occasion as Mel's work isn't far away.
My only real thoughts on this are sympathy for the guy's family, and for those who witnessed what happened.
i went through that yesterday too - its right outside my dentist - and similarly thought that the cycle lane blockage particularly egregious/unnecessary.
sad.
