at work this morning, just checking over lorry when i hear on the radio ( radio scotland,10, 10;30 ish ) about a "bike doc " service, offered by a company that sells second hand bikes that have been donated to them. The van rolls up at your place of work and for free fixes or explains how to fix bikes !!!I couldnt hear very well, engine running, me checking stuff, and when i could hear there was no mention of who did this! The programme, outdoors stuff, on every sun and possibly friday, seemed to be talking a lot about aberdeen so maybe no links to here but hey, if anyone will know its here !

Hi splitshift
The Glasgow Bike Shed is part of the Bike Station, and they are shortly going to be running their own A better way to work project to encourage commuters to find more sustainable ways of getting to work, thanks to a grant from the Climate Challenge Fund. Hence the bike doctor visits to workplaces.
The A better way to work project has been running in Edinburgh since last year - http://www.findabetterwaytowork.org
There are limited details on our website about the Glasgow Bike Station but this will be updated soon: http://www.thebikestation.org.uk/glasgow/

thanks Wendy , and everyone else ! Ive already mailed and chatted to the guys in glasgowbikeshed and they have pointed us towards a funding route also ! Thing is I am involved with our local Air cadets in Grangemouth, 1333sqn. We have a few very competent kids as well as enthusiastic adult instructors/helpers ! Most of the kids are spmewhat less than capable on two wheels and the initial plan was for someone like the bikedoc to come and reignite the cycling spark amongst them !Hopefully myself and poss another could get trained to take them on organised, within the ATC remits , rides. But, bike shed pointed out that they can only do the bike doc thing with companies, in an effort to get people and employers interested. Fair enough, but if we couldnt afford to pay for their services then a couple of grant funds were avail, which he pointed us at ! Perhaps, ultimately we can aquire some bikes and all the rellavent safety equip, ment, get some fully trained competent staff and get all our cadets out there ! Oh and a trailer, weve already got a minibus, bought second hand from the army, so we are recycling too !Its not the sort of project to happen overnight but kids are joining us and growing up all the time. Thank you all for your help.

all good stuff - commuting and all that - but, like the bike repair training that is only for employees, how do unemployed folk - and everyone else who doesn't tick the right boxes - ever get help?

I think that they offer free expertise and tool loans at their workshop. They seem quite helpfull and willing to spread the words !At the very least they offer discounts for the unwaged !ill post right back with some links that ive seen for funding, but your right, it does all seem rather aimed at peeps in work.

SRD - Only a small arm of the Bike Station is dedicated towards employees. Our work with employees through our A better way to work project is grant funded, and the conditions of our grant require us to work with workplaces.
A large proportion of the main Bike Station's time is spent working with disadvantaged groups, and it has been this way for a long time. For example, we provide bicycles to other organisations, charities, youth groups etc to encourage others to cycle, usually in conjunction with cycle training. We regularly apply for grant funding which allows us to work with specific disadvantaged groups at no cost to them. And we also operate a referral bike scheme whereby people on low incomes can be referred to us to buy a bike at a much reduced cost.

wendy, in no way was i aiming my comments at you or those organisations, as a civilian instructor with the Air Cadet movement then I know only too well the way grant funding works ! or rather I dont !!!!Statues get millions but local schemes to help real people with real benefits for them have to jump through ever increasing numbers of ever decreasing in size hoops ! If only common sense could be utilised across the board !

Splitshift - no offence was taken, I was just answering SRD's question on : all good stuff - commuting and all that - but, like the bike repair training that is only for employees, how do unemployed folk - and everyone else who doesn't tick the right boxes - ever get help?
Good luck in finding funding and driving through with your project. I know too well it isn't easy, but your idea sounds like a good one with lots of benefit to the local community.

@ Wendy.... I popped in today but you were out ! Tell me it wasnt you I asked for directions ? I was in an old silver merc, the young lady cyclist in fetching pink fleece type and glam shades did say that she was a good person to ask !
Was going to propose a bulk purchase of bikes an stuff, and was just going to run it past you, costs, any advice on funding etc ! Looks like we might be getting a scout troop to "share " our bikes and spread even further the comunity spirit !
