After almost a week of trouble-free usage my (donated by an associate) Karrimor 'Iberian' (I think) pannier narrowly escaped being squashed into Morrison Street when it fell off just as I was turning round the corner from Semple St.

It was caused by the exposed plastic bit at the bottom being eaten by the spokes, ripping the plastic bit (see fig 2), removing one of the remaining plastic-bit-retaining rivets (one was already missing) and breaking both the top rail clips (see fig 1). The elasticated underhook survived unharmed, as did my rear dérailleur cable, all my spokes and the rack.

I've enough bits of Velcro cable tie and shoelaces to get home and have been told by the internet that replacing the top rail with an Ortlieb QL1 rail and hooks (or possibly Altura Klick) gets around the absence of Karrimor spares and shall pop to a shop in a moment to see if there's anything immediately available. Has anyone any experience of the two named potential replacement systems? Apart from inside old bags, where can I find something equivalent to the stiff plastic stuff to replace the bottom panel thing?

QL1 is what comes as standard on Backrollers I think. Can't say much more than it works and it's good and it should't be difficult to mount it on a pannier so long as there is some sort of inner stiffening on the inside of the pannier.

If it were me, I'd just buy a new pannier. Altura's Arran range are very reasonably priced. I believe they come in singles too if that's what you're after.

Reasonable, but not as cheap as less than a tenner for replacement clips for a donated pannier (singular (at the moment) as the other half of the pair was unable to be found). A pity that the donated rack was only an EX1 or equivalent and lacks the rear flap-prevention elbow of the EX2 but I'll bodge something up to get round that.

Thinking again, there are some 2nd hand Karrimor Iberians and Kalaharis on fleabay just now...

I was surprised how cheap they were (when I was trying to ID the type), though they're not quite as cheap as the price of a cup of coffee and a scone.

Bodging and saving money will seem really worthwhile the next time it breaks, falls into your wheel and throws you off in front of a bus....

If it was a front pannier, perhaps.

Repairs using Vaude clips and a hook result in something much more stable than the original, which was only tethered at the bottom by a hook on a bit of elastic, which allowed quite large amounts of flapping on sharp enough turns, now prevented by the hook at the forward edge. Also, the plastic bit on the inside of the outside at the bottom (only there to stop the ends of hub skewers eating into the nylon (as there's a stiffening layer on the inside)) has been cut back, whereas previously it presented an edge under which a sufficiently enthusiastic spoke could catch (with sufficient swerve-flap).
