"Built on the site of car park B"

Dare I even ask if car park B is to be relocated or terminated?

    Ooh, indeed.

"Temporary pedestrian access from Craigmillar Castle Road will be... erm... ballhats, I knew there was something we were forgetting."

Well according to the accompanying photo, they need to close the whole thing because of the "contractors campsite". So there.

Oh all the extra car parks were built years ago. Important things first.

A huge pile of mud and heras fencing has appeared at the site.

Wonder if there any plans anywhere of how they're going to herd the mud to reduce the slope sufficiently to not require all those stepped-bits-with-cycle-gutters...

    Little France Campus Developments
Closure of Hospitals North footpath on 9/2/15 for 4 weeks

You will be aware of a number of enabling works taking place on the site. These works are taking place in order to prepare the site for the new Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences, which will be built on the site of car park B later this year.

Part of the works these works provides for an upgrade of the existing footpath to the north of the site to provide a combined cycle and footpath.

Unfortunately to do this works the contractor requires to close the whole route on the RIE site (see the attached plan).

The contractor plans to start this work on the 9/2/15 and the works are expected to take 4 weeks.

We thank you for your patience and ongoing support during these works as we look to enhance the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and prepare the site for the new RHSC + DCN.

Suggested diversion is actually quite sensible.

via Craigmillar Castle Avenue, Greendykes Road and Little France Drive.

and doesn't involve the deeply horrifying Craigmillar Castle Road.

Fine for cyclists. Helluva walk but probably still easier than struggling up and down the steps if you have a pushchair.

I tried that path once with a buggy and quickly resorted to carrying it down each set of steps. You could sort of use the wheel-gutter going upwards (with a lockable central front wheel) but that required as much hoickiness as lifting. Not really an option for people who don't like hoicking buggies.

Hauling it up/down one step at a time seems to be the main method. I suppose it is good strength training.

Work is now happening and it seems that the path is just being moved a bit at the bottom part to make it less steep. It is not clear what anti-cycling measures are going to be put in yet. I await further progress with baited badgers.

Be sure to alert the Bollard (and Chicane) Protection Authority to any vulnerable bike traps that may require defensive hosiery?

Nice idea. So long as they do them in matt black of course, just to keep up standards. TiE after all.

    Is this finished yet?
I've not been at work for a while.
    How's it looking?

New path came on line this week. Nice new asphalt (no steps as far as I can see) but the margins are recently-turned mud, will take a bit of landscaping. Perfectly usable though. Not quite the same festival of hairpin bends that the Russel Road - Roseburn path link is...

Yes, it seems pretty nice but I did notice a small section that seems to be subsiding already! They have tarmacked right up to the council section which is nice as you no longer have that gravelly bit.

    New path...

Still needs a bit of work at the bottom - current access is via an undropped kerb with a tarmac-splodge pseudoramp, though there's a still-fenced-off bit which might be the proper access.
Not quite wide enough for a pedestrian to pass to the side of one normal cyclist sticking to the left and one dozy dingbat veering about not less than a metre to their right unless he starts looking where he's going and moves over a bit. Room for one cyclist to overtake two others through the middle, providing he wakes up again, straightens up and moves over.
Still erratically steep/shallow, though can now be ascended seated, with a laden pannier, at 40T*26T*700C. Also no need to swerve into and out of the gutters whilst avoiding being trapped by the little wooden fence things.

    Nice!
    I know that pair.
Dozy dingbat is correct but the other definitely isn't normal!

Excellent video, pteroporcus! That looks much better. Madame IWRATS has demanded a recreational cycle today, so I that will be the link to the Innocent.

Hope the hail doesn't destabilise the earthen banks, either.

Well that is something which bothers me a bit about it as there doesn't seem to be anything to stop it all gradually landsliding away over the years. :-/

There is some sort of landscaping happening round about the path now, or at least some earth is being pushed about. Will post an update when something has happened.

Chicanes have now appeared at the bottom of the path. They don't look very well placed.

Great desire line cutting out the new sweeping corner - surely that could have been predicted. Why not build a shortcut path for pedestrians?

"Cyclists must dismount" sign at the top of the 'steep' bit. Not sure if I've seen the word "must" used before.

Dismount seems to only apply downhill. Seems very odd, amongst all the shared-use signs.

I *think* sign is left over from when there were steps -

or has someone made a new one??

Looks like it was there on the 7th of April just after the slopened path opened.

Been there for at least 5 years according to my post on page 2 of this thread. At least the one at the bottom got removed during the upgrade.

There is a planning application in for an active travel route Little France Drive to The Wisp

    17/05986/FUL

It is a committee decision - don't know why.

Might be worth a look if this concerns you...
