this is carzy - people already drive in to these streets then take a bus into town - i see it all the time. this will just encourage that and block up spaces for local businesses etc.

Well, they obviously feel that the parking is overpriced/underutilised, and want to encourage more use (since if it was oversubscribed, that would be an indication that the price is not high enough).

What a shame they can't just celebrate the fact that the parking charges that were claimed to be to discourage people from driving into Edinburgh are actually working. Could it be that it was never about discouraging driving? Surely not.

So long as the councils attitudes to streets is that they carparks and sources of revenue-generation, rather than places were people live, play and shock! horror! drive, cycle and walk then this sort of situation will never change.

The nicest thing about looking at old photos of Edinburgh is that you can see the streets and the pavements and the buildings without the sight of row upon rows of dull, mass-manufactured white-goods cars. Oh, and according to the comments it is the fault of cyclists and congestion and parking trouble never existed "before" (funnily enough, I was looking at the Domesday Revisited site earlier and the picture for Queensferry Road was "Morning traffic in the rain"!)

P.S. fascinating site, check it oot.
