Look, I really don't want to re-open _that_ debate, but thought you guys might be interested in this story from Ottawa:

Bixi's lack of bike helmets deters riders

Ottawa's new Bixi bike-renting program may be a convenient way of getting from one point to another, but the lack of helmets is putting some residents off.

The operation, launched by the National Capital Commission, is planning to expand from its current fleet of more than 100 bikes at 10 stations.

But city politicians say a greater focus on safety is necessary in order for that to happen.

"If we partner with them, we have to see if we can better educate people on use of helmets and perhaps work with health units to provide helmets," May Jim Watson said.

Helmets are a crucial factor to have been overlooked in the Bixi program, say potential customers.

    'Giving it a miss'
"We'd really like to be riding around town," one person said. "We have visitors in, but the girls didn't bring their helmets, so we're giving it a miss this time."

Some other local bike-rental businesses give out helmets for every bike they rent out.

Ottawa city councillor Katherine Hobbs thinks helmets should also be a necessity for Bixi.

"From my perspective, there would have to be helmets offered," Hobbs said. "I can't see that service without offering helmets."

NCC officials also urge cyclists to wear helmets, but say they don't want to be in the business of renting them due to hygiene and safety reasons.

"What if someone drops it? Would it protect someone else from a head injury?" said NCC spokesperson Jasmine Leduc.

Ontario laws require everyone under 18 to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle, and helmets are strongly recommended by safety advocates for all riders.

Certainly an interesting way of not starting a helmet debate ;-)

Notwithstanding sound bites to the contrary, you have to admit when you compare rental figures for schemes with helmets to those without, there's a quite startling difference, for example:

    Velib : 20,000 bikes, 150,000 daily journeys (7.5 journeys / bike)
Boris : 5,000 bikes, up to 17,000 daily journeys (3 journeys / bike)
Bixi (Montreal) : about 2.2 journeys / bike, although I found good stats a little hard to come by... it will be interesting to see how Toronto squares up.

Melbourne, (bike share with helmets): just 70 trips per day (for 600 bikes), or 0.1 journeys/bike.

The situation in Melbourne is so bad that it's become the poster child for the revocation campaign there. And I suppose it's also worth observing that Mexico and Israel revoked their helmet laws to help their hire schemes.

Seems a little strange, if what's really needed is the opposite. I find it odd that people will not use a spontaneous bike scheme because they haven't got helmets, when by definition you can't spontaneously be carrying your helmet around 24/7 ;-)

It sounds to me as if they need to question why so many people would rather wear helmets of uncertain provenance, filled with the sweat and nits of countless other users than ride without one. What are the road layouts and driver/local press attitudes like?

Staying purposely away from the sensitive parts of the argument(!)..

What Min said, for example when I've gone Karting (where a helmet is compulsory) I will take my own, the thought of putting on a manky, ill fitting, probably sweaty lid gives me the boak* (have a look if you ever visit a kart track, they are truly horrid)

I certainly wouldn't consider using a "pool" helmet on a rental bicycle, the thought of the state of the lids after a day or two in the summer makes me shudder :-(

Perhaps they should be offering cheap BS or equivalent standard helmets for sale at cost, if they want to promote helmet/rental bike use, then at least people would be more likely to be wearing one that fits, is undamaged and has no potential health/hygiene issues

After all, I've always been taught in the past that an ill fitting helmet is often worse than none at all!

    *tech term ;-)

I was in London a couple of weeks back and noticed a guy on a Boris Bike wearing a helmet. I guess if you're a daily user then carrying your own helmet around isn't that much hassle.
