Tomorrow I shall be loading far to much luggage onto the LHT, meeting a couple of pals at Waverly for a bit of lunch then letting the train take the strain up to Thurso, after which we'll be taking a scenic run back down, camping where we feel like it and hopefully enjoying dry weather and light/no winds.... hopefully!
If you see us say hello :-) otherwise, speak to you all in a week or so!

Bon voyage! Remember you're heading "down" the map, so that makes it downhill all the way!

Good luck. It looks like you'll have a tail-wind tomorrow.

Thanks chaps and chapesses, luggage now 99.9% packed (and boy this bike will be heavy! lol). A tailwind would be a novelty, hope it lasts!!
Just got to nick the pedals from my other bike (I appear to have knackered the bearings on another set of pedals... sigh), adjust the clips on my front panniers and it's shower change and go time B-)

I think today may be warm...!

(thinks) wonder if I can squeeze a couple of tins of beer in the bags...hmmmmm :-)

Have a great time - well done on the weather timing too !!

We chose last weekend for our lads jaunt round the trossachs / perthshire - and the weather was truly honking much of the time.

I was particularly taken with the horizontal sleet / hailstones we encountered at the top of Ben Lawers.

On the plus front, it proved that the carradice saddlebag is in fact waterproof !

In the end we decided to come down the A9 cycle route rather than the Great Glen due to weather and the groups fitness/experience(!).
A good weeks cycling though, and my legs know it today lol
Managing Drumochter Pass with 25Kg+ loaded onto a touring bike was probably my personal achievement moment of the trip though! :-o

Keep it in mind chaps and chapesses, £14.20 for a rail ticket for you and your bike from Edinburgh to Thurso... bargain!!

edited to add, the full size pic is in the citycycling edinburgh Flickr group ;-)

    Well done.

How was surface of route at pass?

I know route near Carrbridge and Aviemore down to Kingussie and there it's all small roads so nice cycling I think?

The route was ok at the pass, being a hard pack/fine gravel surface (from memory!) it would be a bit annoying on skinny tyres, but on the specialized armadillos it was fine, a pal on a specialized tricross had no problems with it.
The closed section was annoying, we chose to ride the A9 at that point rather than "cheat" and phone for a lift but tbh I wouldn't reccommend it, not nice with the traffic and all.
The rest of it was very nice cycling however, once the cyclepath is reinstated it should be a glorious route :)

Well done Smudge, I was in Scapa diving and drove back on Sat 4th June so we may have driven past you on our return. I recall Saturday was a lovely day with sun all the way home. Tere seamed to be huindreds of cyclist heading south from Scrabster on our drive south and I did see some riders who were raising money for some Solders charity.

We spotted the A9 cycle route on the drive north. I commented I'd love to do this cycle route.

We did all the usual suspects and had both a Windy Thursday and a fine 25 degrees C Friday. The vis was ok 6 - 8m so not as good as the 15m I'd heard reports of. I'd love to go back and can recomend Radiant Queen as the Accom is onshore just behind the Ferry Inn and 25m from the boat mooring! Sept next year hopefully.

You didn't happen to spot a 60-year-old Welsh bloke doing a LEJOG for the Meningitis Trust on your way?

@winpig, afraid not, there were a lot of people on bikes but I didn't spot him, we went South from Bettyhill as well (nice route) rather than down the coast or from Tongue.

@Min, only once my knees recover! :-o
