Off-topic (but vaguely green) question - anyone have any recommendations regarding manual lawn-mowers?

Borrowed a neighbour's 'qualcast panther' and was very impressed. It cut a much-too-long lawn very easily. Much lighter than I remember them being. The 4 year old got really inspired and found she could do it by herself too. (she actually did a surprisingly good job).

I would like to get one, but really don't want to spend any extra money right now. So, while I wait to see if there are any sales towards the end of the summer, it would be helpful to know if anyone's had a particularly good/bad experience.

(When I was a kid my older brother would go out on his bike on garbage day and bring home stuff from other people's rubbish - especially manual lawnmowers, bikes, and shortwave radio sets....maybe there is some connection?)

SRD, get yourself a Brill Razorcut - not the cheapest, but much better than the competition - I got one last year and it cuts better, is greener, quieter etc than any electric/motorised offering.

It is actually contact free cutting so is incredibly quiet - even for a hand mower.

I got mine online, unsure if anyone stocks them locally.

I have a loose connection in my extension cable so was up and down the garden, into the house plugging, unplugging, changing fuses etc only managed one bit of grass. I think I will get a manual. I have given up on strimmer and just use long handled shears for the edges. Oiled them today and they are cutting well.

I actually just gave away one on freegle yesterday. I realise that's no use to you but keep your eyes peeled. They do pop up.

I gave mine away only because I've inherited an electric one. I can recommend even the cheapy one I had. As I recall it was about 20-30 quid, so not a huge amount of money. Even the Qualcast can be bought for less than 40 quid on Amazon. I am not so sure I can trust my 4 year old lad to operate it or any lawn cutting machinery, but each to their own :-)

ARGH! I had posted to freegle asking for one...a while ago I guess.

I wasn't inclined to let K. mow, but her father said 'why not' so I let her hold on with me, and then she wanted to try on her own. I made her promise to never try and clear a twig if it jammed, and she was fine. under supervision of course.

Well, this lunchtime I've had a look through all the responses I got from my freegle ad, and none of them give me the feeling they really need the lawn mower, if you see what I mean. Somebody actually said 'go on gies it'. Cheeky git!

So you can have it if you like as I know your need is genuine :-)

    PM me for collection arrangements.

Oh dear, nice liberal system of giving to strangers subverted by communitarian ties...THANK YOU.

this will also let me mow neighbour's lawn too - >90 year old cyclist, now suffering heart problems.

No problem, happy to help. Yeah, it's not what you know, it's who you know :-) I mean honestly, if the folk who reply to Freegle ads just used a bit of common sense, they'd be far more likely to get the things they want. I don't expect begging letters but you'd think they'd justify their need somewhat and be polite.

Well, back to the mower - I doubt it's as good as the Qualcast but it's light and easy to maintain and my plastic surgeon can testify that the blades are super sharp ;-)

I'll try and clean it up a bit.
