"Shimano look to have raised the bar once more, with the long-rumoured Ultegra version of their Di2 electronic road groupset due for release this winter. This second-tier group is expected to be around half the price of the flagship Dura-Ace set – which, although lauded for its performance, has been out of reach of most riders due to its prohibitive pricing"

  2. I got a publicity email the other day about a bike from somewhere on the continent with a shaft drive mated to a Shimano Nexus 8 speed hub. Most definitely aimed at the commuter, they had 3 (I think) different models employing it, including a folder.

    "shaft drive mated"

Shaft drives have always be regarded as 'inefficient' (compared with derailleurs), hub gears too.

    So the two together...

BUT - the sort of person buying Ultegra isn't after a low maintenance utility bike. Though of course 'we' know that some people want/have bikes at both 'extremes'.

For years the bike industry (similar with cars) was run by people more interested in speed/racing. So there were 'only' two choices - the basic utility/roadster/ordinary - one gear or three and the 'racer' with drop bars and (generally) high gears (5 or 10).

Now almost anything is possible/available - encouraging more 'non-cyclists' to ride.

You do have to give Shimano credit, however, for servicing the full extent of the market - from cheap as chips plastic stuff at the bottom to unaffordable Dura-Ace Di-2 for the pros at the top. For MTBs, road bikes, commuters and tourers. And they generally do a pretty good job of it. If they want to play around with what to most people seems like ridiculously expensive and pointless electronic shifting then in the long run "we" might benefit as the technology trickles down to more affordable and practical levels.
