The Council can make LAWS
"
Dear Street Activists,
On Thursday morning, we're standing with City Council members to announce new legislation that will make NYC streets much safer. The bill will create an office of road safety to tie together the enforcement work of the NYPD, design projects at the DOT and the various research and education efforts of other agencies. We need you to stand with us, help fill the photo frame and send a signal to Council members that this bill needs to pass!
WHAT: Rally/press conference to unveil proposal for the Office of Road Safety
WHEN: February 11, at 10 am
WHO: Council Member Jessica Lappin
Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives New York residents affected by dangerous traffic
WHERE: City Hall steps, Manhattan
More than 250 New Yorkers were killed on New York City's roads in 2009. And every year, more than 10,000 pedestrians are struck and injured. Despite this epidemic, the disparate parts of City government charged with road safety often work in total isolation from one another. Opportunities to bring down injuries and fatalities are slipping through the cracks every day, and lives are being lost.
Council Member Lappin and Transportation Alternatives will propose creating an Office of Road Safety. This office would bridge the large gaps between agencies charged with traffic safety, especially the Department of Transportation and NYPD, and lead a coordinated effort to reduce and ultimately eliminate road fatalities in New York City.
