    I don't cycle to work to save money that's not my motovation. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/bike-blog/2011/jul/07/money-save-cycling
    There is also a cycle to work cost calculator. http://www.cycletoworkcalculator.com/ Apologies if this has been posted on the forum already.

    Based on the "audax" bike I built up earlier in the year (c. £450) that I do most of my commuting on and giving 30 minutes each way for commuting;

    * You have saved £213 so far by cycling to work
    * Cycling to work currently costs you just £3.94 a day and only 26.25p a mile
    * Yearly saving £1062 or £88.51 a month or £4.07 a day
    * Bike paid off in 78 days = 36 days of free riding

    * Miles per year = 3911 or 326 miles a month
    * 850 calories a day
    * Time saved a year = 5 days or 11 hours a month or 30 minutes each day

    I couldn't justify what i spend/have spent on bikes for commuting, but I don't have to... it improves my quality of life and is (still) making me fitter and healthier. But better and more important than all of that sensible stuff, it's just fun :-)

    The cost calculator doesn't work in my case anyway as I stopped riding a motorbike 40+ miles a day to bike/train/bike, the season ticket costs pretty much the same as the fuel bill, but obviously I'm saving money on wear and tear/maint for the motorbike, on the other hand I've spent (lots) of money on my ideal bicycle(s)... nothing is straightforward, and some things are downright complicated :-))

    Lucky I'm not in this for the money savings!

    With a daily 10-mile round trip, the amount I've spent on the bike, gear and servicing in the past two years works out at about 30p/mile.

    It's fair to say that quite a bit of this is due to unforeseen costs of replacing bits of the bike that shouldn't have needed to be replaced (for example, I've spent £200 on brakes so far).

    However, it's worth it just to avoid the interminable wait for the 35 bus to and from work, which, as a colleague once said 'stops at every hole in the hedge'

    More proof that I really love cycling, cos based on the economics and time lost I wouldn't do it (OK, I don't have to own such a fancy bike I know)...
    Anyways for me cycling is nothing about economics, I really do spend more to cycle to work because of part car/part cycle for a lot of journeys.
    The cost is irrelevant, I pay for my hobby, if I played golf or went to the gym there would be a cost involved.
    As for my losing 50 minutes a day each day (on full commute), well that's just 50 minutes a day that I don't have to spend in a gym or playing golf, so there really is no loss of time.

    So in conclusion:
    I don't cycle to work to save money that's not my motovation

    *You are £2100 away from breaking even
    *CYCLING TO WORK CURRENTLY COSTS YOU £10 A DAY AND 33.33P A MILE
    *YEARLY SAVING: £-3488, £-290.66 a month, £-13.38 a day
    *BIKE PAID OFF IN: 862 days (362 days to go)
    *TIME SAVED A YEAR: -9 days, -18 hours a month, -50 minutes each day

    With my old bike: £0.39 A DAY

    With my new bike: £7.78 A DAY (!)

    But in both cases I save 11 days 22 hours a month 60 minutes each day. And that was on a generous estimate of how long the bus takes.

    "But in both cases I save 11 days 22 hours a month"

    Don't think so!

    Is that from the online calculator??

    1 hour per day, 11 days a year, 22 hours a month?

    I did find some of their way of displaying a bit confusing, but then wasn't paying that much attention.

    I used to keep an accurate log of everything I spent on the bike and all the miles. This reminds me to spend an hour or so looking through all the mail order email receipts in my inbox and update it!

    I did split them into 'wear' and 'elective' categories though, because I wanted to understand how much it *had* to cost (i.e. new chain) as opposed to what it cost because I treat myself (i.e. to a pair of fast wheels).

    After PBP when I don't need to train, I'm going to make myself a beater for commuting and see how cheaply it can be done ;-)
