As mentioned in the Nominate Your Favourite Hill thread, here is my suggested route for riding from the Esplanade to Leith without pedalling (and ideally without stopping either), in the dead of morning when the roads are quiet and not even a mouse is stirring.

The tricky one on this route will be making the left turn onto North Bridge, and the right-left onto Leith Street, without losing too much speed. There will also have to be much anticipation of traffic light sequences to get an all-green run. :-)

Now we need to pick a date!

  2. That seems to be the most sensible route. My biggest concern is the Constitution Street section - will we carry enough pace from Leith Walk for it!

I feel honour-bound to suggest a date after Kappers is back from his tour as he was also pretty keen on this idea. We must also pick an appropriate breakfast stop for after the event. Though that might entail some riding about till something opens - OR we take bacon and rolls and little camping stoves and retire to a quiet corner of the harbour.

Are there any 6 a.m. pubs in Leith anymore?

Rock Salt, a short distance back along Constitution Street. Not sure when it opens in the morning, especially on Sunday. The Beach House isn't much further and opens early even on weekends. Relish opens at 8 most days, I think.

Around the corners at High Street - North Bridge and North Bridge - Leith Street we'd need to perhaps study the light timings and hang back a wee bit away from the junction in order to be able to keep speed up over the flat bits at the approach to the line. Much trickier will be Leith Walk - Constitution St and across the Bernard/Baltic junction, where we won't have a little slope to anticipate the lights on.

Now that someone has linked to this thread I'm curious as to what Arellcat's proposed route was. bikeroutetoaster doesn't appear to exist anymore and sadly the link has gone with it.

Did anyone ever try this? I remember the coversations at the time, but not hearing from anyone who had actually done it
