Seems there are three issues: (1) getting these put in, (2) keeping them maintained, and (3) getting drivers to maintain them. Raising the following questions:

Did/does the council consult on (1)?

How do we get them maintained (2)

Has anyone ever tried pro-bicycling advertising on buses? or leafleting at intersections where drivers routinely flout them?

  2. Advert on the back of the bus saying something like... 'If you were on a bike you wouldn't be stopped behind this bus'? Hell, you can only stare at those ads so long before they really do work their way into your brain.

    Wonder how much it costs...

Yup. that's the sort of thing i was thinking of. Or 'every cyclist is one less car on the road'. not quite true, but close....

Yes, this is what we need to encourage more cycling. Good old fashioned campaigns. Not councillers or politicians occasionally saying "oh by the way everyone should be cycling but we are not putting any money into it"

Although having complained about driver non-compliance on another thread, the ASL I use that seems to be complied with the best is actually a black one - at the intersection of North Bridge/Waterloo place!

@ Anth, ever consisted a career in Advertising? Brilliant idea!

@ SRD, sadly it's quite true, it is more like one more cyclist on the road one more free seat on the bus. The move to cycling is usually from public transport. The problem is the incentives are all wrong, if you own a car there are too many incentives to keep using it instead of moving to a mix of more sustainable transport.

"it is more like one more cyclist on the road one more free seat on the bus"

It would be interesting to know if there was been any survey on 'where cyclists come from' in Edinburgh.

There was a survey 3 1/2 years ago but I don't know what the questions/results were.

In London one reason they spend 'so much' money on cycling is to reduce pressure on public transport - and particularly the need to provide extra capacity - which is expensive.

The spokes surveys do ask something like 'is there a car available to you' and a surprisingly high proportion said 'yes'.

Have been mulling over suggesting a bus advert campaign along these lines -- esp whenever I sit looking at buses going by -- very happy to subcontract actual text to anth & others :) There are lots of cool 'wraps' that could be done -- one with a cycle chic type, one with a trendy lycra type, etc.

The Bike Co-op did back of the bus ads for a while.

Obviously they were trying to persuade people to shop with them, and I can't remember the text, but the message was clear that 'you'd be better off on a bike than sitting in that car'.

I suspect that it was successful, but obviously wouldn't persuade everyone.

@ Chdot "It would be interesting to know if there was been any survey on 'where cyclists come from' in Edinburgh."

Give it a year and see what the results of the Bike Station's 80:40:20 project are. Will we see a move from commuting by car to cycle or will we see a change from bus to bike. Or something else?

As for the ad, I thing the slogan would work better if it was "I bought a car - then I bought a bike". The problem with the current ad is that it suggest that bikes are for those who are already fit and active.
