Started for staff and students, the Scratch Bikes scheme can now be used by anyone.

Billed as cheaper to set up and run than those in Paris and London, maybe it could work in Edinburgh(?)

Next up for ScratchBikes will be the roll-out of a new bicycle-based locking system which, said Grisdale, could be rapidly and cheaply deployed on city bike schemes elsewhere in the world.

Sounds like a clone of Nextbike which was started about 5 years ago in Austria. Uses unit attached to bike that is powered by dynamo and GSM data link.

Low cost but can be abused - put bike off hire but well hidden so you can get a bike for the return trip guaranteed.

It will be interesting to see how many get stolen, hopefully none. I wish them luck!
