I met this Dutch family in Oban, en route to a cycling holiday in Barra (I was heading to Islay via Colonsay). They had come from near Amsterdam via ferry then trains (and were highly complimentary of both Scotrail and taking bikes on trains in the UK!)

They said the older boy could do 50km a day and there was a special folding hitch on Mum's bike that could turn the younger girl's bike into a tag along. I thought the mini-Ortliebs on their bikes (Raleighs) were quite cute.

And the adults looked to be carrying more weight each than I was!

    Anyway, though I would share.

    First post here.. Great forum!

Can't see photo, but I suspect it's the same amazing Dutch family that we met on the ferry at Newcastle. We were returning from our family cycling holiday round North Holland, but these guys had a 6 and 8 year old and planning to head to Harris! And Camping! They were carrying a ton and the 8 year old was doing all the cycling by himself too...

Great to see this. Your story reminds me that when we were touring around Norfolk, quite a few folk asked if we were Dutch or German. When we asked why, apparently the only cycle campers with kids seen touring in Norfolk come from those countries!

    welcome shuggiet!

    Thanks k/nik for posting!

I'd say this was 'inspiring' but that is a bit too close to 'brave' (as in, you're nuts to do that...)

@shuggiet, yes, that must be them! Ferry to Newcastle then train to Oban then ferry to Barra and then a few weeks of camping and touring around the outer Hebrides.

I think Twitpic must change the thumb filename to stop you hotlinking pictures the way I first did it. I think this way should stay up.
