I have just bought one of these to fit to my "Sunday best" bike. Bizarrely this has no fine adjustment mechanism for the front derailleur. I think the idea is to fit these between two bits of cable outer. My question is can this be done at somewhere convenient like the down tube stopper. My blue bike has them here but they work in a different way. Here is a picture of the parts.

I can't quite work out what it's meant to be from the photo, but my sunday best bike doesn't have inline barrel adjusters on the down tube stoppers either. They are instead located where the derailleur cable exits the hood. Of course if you have the fancy new shifters where the derailleur cable is routed under the bar tape, I can see your problem. I've some spare (used) barrel adjusters I took off my old Trek road bike if you want to play with them? Although they might spoil your racing lines.

    I can't see the photo....

Imagine a grey rectangle, with a slight formica grain to it, with 2 smaller black rectangles in it. One of the rectangles is smaller and more regular shaped than the other. The second rectangle is slightly irregular shaped as it is actually 2 rectangles joined together, one longer and thinner, one shorter and fatter. The shorter-fatter part is not central on the longer-thinner part, but slightly offset to the right. Both rectangles are actually cylinders photographed side-on.

    Crystal?

Don't know what the problem was, seems to have sorted itself.

Quite a few rear derailleurs these days have dispensed with barrel adjusters, and of course, front ones have never really had them anyway.

I put an inline adjuster on one bike for the rear gear cable, after my bodged barrel adjuster finally stopped working. I placed it a little upstream of the derailleur, as it was easier and more discrete than having it on the stem riser, but since the bike doesn't see winter weather it has a fairly safe life.

My tourer (Deore XT rear, Tiagra front) doesn't have any barrel adjustment at the rear. I assumed this was to keep the muck out of it as it is an MTB-themed piece of kit.

It has adjustment on the down-tube, but it's not regualar cable stops rather there are braze-ons for downtube-type shifters and the adjuster therefore also functions as a converter to allow STIs to be used (I have same on my Audax bike).

They ajustment mehcanism is very neat, with a flange for the thumb to push on and ratchet stops set into it at 8th turns, so you can click through easily until you get the correct cable tension.

Thanks for the help. I have now fitted it. It was a bit fiddly to get it right - I first put it next to the stopper but that wasn't too clever since it makes the cable line too straight in the wrong place. So I made a break in the outer further up.

Here's another pic (out of focus)
