    I've been meaning to get this together for a week, but took the opportunity of a car alarm waking me before 9 to sort it out.

    Here is the route of my 12 day, 770 mile, 26,000 climbing-feet tour from Edinburgh to Dunnet Head (the long way)

    On other threads I have posted of the silly bits of cycle path I came across and the failure of the Marathon Plus so I won't bore you (any further) by repeating them here.

    However if you are ever in or near Durness, then definitely go out of your way to make a stop here;

    Hungry cyclists stop here

    Not cheap (£4.95 for a large hot chocolate), but divine.

    Looks like you were on Islay/Jura about same time as folks In know. I will ask if they spotted a large amount of beautiful ortlieb kit streaking along the road to Will Self/George Orwell

    Looks like a great trip. Nice touring bike too, I like the all yellow trim!

    I presume the long way round involves fewer leg breaking climbs?

    I'm surprised at the Marathon Pluses failing. Mine have been great for over a year now, just pump them up and forget about them, still the same tubes...

    Alas no! The only bit I avoided to do this was cutting inland from Torridon towards Dingwall, then back NW again the next day to Scourie along Loch Shin. I had wanted to continue around the coast to Ullapool and onwards, but had a deadline to meet and didn't think that would give me enough time. On reflection it probably would have been OK. But some other time!

    Touring bike was nearly-new eBay special last year. Got off a bloke from EBC who was selling it to pay for the cost of the Berlin to Istanbul tour he did on it I think. I put on the Brooks saddle, front rack, yellow guards, cables and tape, pedals and kickstand and have worn through a couple of sets of transmission from commuting in the winter on it etc. Apart from that it's as I bought it and has been a great buy - got £550 off the new price.

    Only complaint is that because it is a compact geometry, there's insufficient space under downtube for a 750ml bottle because they have mounted the eyes for the cage too far forward. Didn't have time to rectify this shortcoming before setting off.
