Off to Koeln in October for a week for work and the last couple of times I've jealously looked at all the Germans stylishly scooting about the reasonable bike infrastructure.

Thought I had a smart idea to chuck my bike in a CTC poly bag and take it with me for a bit of an explore, but sadly KLM (this is the dutch bit) don't do special pricing on bikes, they just count them as a separate piece of luggage, so it's £37 each way. Annoyingly they carry standard golf bags FoC.

    Harumph.

Wondering whether I can get my duds into a hand luggage sized bag that can be bungee corded to my back rack. I thought airlines usually had a flat £10 or £20 ew fee.

Other tiny issue is the trip from Cologne Bonn Airport to the city :) Although that's more of a challenge. May just rent a bike for the free day I've got. Is a shame though.

Was in Köln a few years ago, stopover on a cheap airline connection...

Lovely place, very nice pubs, bars, restaurants. Also lots of galleries if you like that sort of thing. Didn't cycle but saw lots that were.

Cologne/Bonn has a handy S-Bahn straight into Cologne city centre. Since it's Germany and well organised I'd imagine you could take a bike on it?

Funny, I had completely forgot about that, first time I was there i took a cab and last time I flew into dusseldorf and got the (amazing) ICE train.

The transit there is great though (despite being worked on by bilfinger berger)

One problem is that my flight back is at 6am. May just do the bike rental plan for a day. Really wish all cities had a velib/velov/boris bike scheme, they are incredibly convenient.

Do cycle by all means :-) but you might be in luck with the train - looks like the first train leaves Cologne at 4:21am!
