well 2 weeks later...............
and I have another(same one?) broken spoke on the rear
Halfords only have silver spokes in stock
really,Is it so unrealistic to hold a black spoke or two in stock?
Im doing 45 to 50 miles a week
so I dont think a spoke every 100 miles is an ideal situation
I ride on the road or cycle paths

@custard - that does not sound correct, may I enquire are you quite a big person? I had a colleague who was a large person [he has lost many kilos since retiring from work and cycling all the time] but he had an early electric bicycle and the spokes used to go regularly
regardless of size, this shouldn't happen after 3-5weeks and given the repeat I wonder if the wheel is not true. Under warranty you are possibly due a new wheel? I would ask them about this, they might get you a supply of black spokes then but if they keep going there is maybe more to it.

yes I will concede Im in the Clydesdale sector than super waif :o
last time I got the "well these things happen"
which is true but if a bike cant handle road use of 50 miles a week then its not much use to me
whilst I'll likely pick up spare wheels as i did with my MTBs as it meant the bike could remain useable
its not really ideal to be required to do it on a new £600 bikeI may go with a silver spoke this time and then we can see if its the same spoke that goes

good plan custard.
I had a bearing go on one side of front wheel on bike I had used very little, it was outwith warranty but EBC gave me new front wheel and new back wheel [with shimano hubs rather than generic ones]. It was a pleasure doing business with them. The mechanic 'G' also put new tubes as the valves wouldn't poke out the new rims. Very considerate. Possibly there had been a minor sort of recall thing I missed?
I would be saying to them - is this wheel true? two spokes gone in five weeks is not right in my limited understanding if the wheel is not a perfect circle as it were then there is more likelihood of spoke going

Custard, even if you are a Clydesdale, spokes shouldn't be breaking. I weigh about two wingpigs and have only broken 1 spoke in hundreds of miles, including very rough roads and taking a fully loaded tourer up the dreadful track to the top of Jura. Might be worth having a look at the spoke holes to see if there's some sharpness that could be cutting into the neck of the spoke and maybe sticking with straight gauge replacements.

dropped the bike off today
different staff from the last time i was in or whom i spoke to on the phone
explained it had a broken spoke and it was in 2 week previously for the same thing,possibly the same spoke
seem to raise an eyebrow so dont know if its a known issue or not
(3 other guys at work have now bought the same model now but do hardly any miles,so dont know if they will raise an inherent fault if it exists)
bike should be ready for Wednesday............

@custard I regularly carry ridiculous (for most folk) amounts of weight on 32-spoke 700c wheels. Bike is more than 2 years old, no broken spokes so far. I reckon if you've had two breakages on such a new bike it must be a problem with the wheel.

my crossrocs have run for years on black spokes without issue
Im still thinking of having a go at building my own wheels at some point

Got a phonecall on Friday (what happened to my Wednesday slot?)
that the bike was ready.spoke replaced and 6 week check up done
my disc brakes were mentioned as not being covered(no problem as I swapped cable for hydros i had already)
then there was an awkward conversation about one of the brakes being below standard yada yada
they're right,it needs bled but the way the guy was fumbling his words it was like he expected me to go nuts on the phone.
no idea why
I said I would do it myself(£19.99 to get it done)

I'd insist on them fitting only silver spokes. this way both you & them can see how rubbish their spokesare, as you're wheel slowly (or perhaps quickly) turns from black to silver.
Funny, my spokes usually turn silver to black as I don' clean my bikes enough...

well at this point its been 2 spokes
Im a fair person and these things can happen
however if it happens a 3rd time in a short time span (i'll be doing about 100 miles a week commuting) then we shall be looking at a different scenario and possible resolutionsPosted 13 years ago # -

This is to be expected - the spoke which broke first was just the one which took most of the punishment.
With a wheel of substandard tension, the other spokes are still being fatigued, whether or not someone replaces the broken spoke - unless they effectively rebuild the wheel in such a way as the spokes stop fatiguing (which is what a good bike shop can do for you, but I would guess, perhaps, has not happened to you).
Ask for a replacement wheel.

I think this is the only sensible course of action
the bike is my main mode of transport
Ive put my car off the road and allowed the MOT to expire
so its over £200 to get it back on the road with no MOT work
I need the bike
2 days a week im a 0430 start at the gyle. with no bike I need to walk 2 miles to a bus stop
get a night bus to princes street
wait,then get another night bus to wrk
which gets me in 30 minutes early to a locked buildingthe bike is just 2 months old and has been in for repair 3 times
hopefully the wheel will hold to get me in for my 0430 start tomorrow

@custard, this is not looking good. Maybe your wheel needs to be completely rebuilt, rather than just replacing a spoke again and again.

well to me its obvious there's an inherent fault with the wheel
the spoke always goes on the drive side at the hub(probably the same spoke)
on my last visit it was stated that if it went again it would be time for a new wheel.
so we shall see if that's met.
think is I had a couple of weeks holiday so the wheel had under 3 weeks use since it was repairedPosted 13 years ago # -
I've broken a spoke twice - ever - back when I was much heavier, on cheapo Alex Rims from the bottom of the range Trek road bike that was many years old and had never been maintained.
Since then, with semi decent (but by no means expensive) wheels and many thousands (probably over 10 thousand), carrying all sorts of weights over all sorts of terrain and I've hardly had more than the odd bit of truing required.
Wheels are NOT meant to do this.
In no uncertain terms you should tell them if they can't fix it this time you will take it to a proper wheelbuilder, who knows what they are doing, and you will be expecting Halfords to foot the bill.
Halford's approach of replacing one flawed out-of the box wheel with another and simply replacing the offending spokes obviously isn't dealing with the root cause (which sounds like the wheel is either too weak for what they want it to do, or it is being grossly badly set-up)

Similarly, despite carrying sometimes excessive loads on my bikes, I've never had a spoke break on me yet (touch wood).
A replacement wheel may be fine. I ride a Halfords bike several days a week, sometimes with heavy loads and no big issues like this (though 20" wheels are inherently stronger). There may be a fault with your current wheel: it's probably just the spoke tension but there may be a problem with the rim or hub.

well theres 4 of us with the same bike at work(bloomin copycats ;)
however I do far more miles than the rest ,who do simple leisure riding.
however none have had any issues
so im hoping its a rogue wheel
simple fact is that I need a working bike.
okay its not a high spec bike but its still a £600 bike that isnt coping with a commute when ridden sympatheticallyPosted 13 years ago # -
For the record I never broke a spoke or buckled a rim on my £240 Halfords bike!
