  1. Dear sirs

I wanted to drop you a line to compliment the quality of driving which you clearly instil in your drivers. I cycle to work in Edinburgh every day and the incidences of truly poor driving are not as frequent as may be thought. Most drivers are absolutely fine, if a little impatient or misjudged, but occasionally you do notice someone going out of their way to be a good driver – such was the case at around 8am today on the Royal Mile with the driver of SO05 AHZ.

Heading uphill I was keeping pace with a bus and van ahead, and your driver patiently slotted in behind me, instead of simply assuming I would be slower than the traffic ahead. When the bus stopped to pick up passengers I passed after the van ahead, and then the general traffic was moving more quickly than I was (having hit the steepest part of the climb, that’s my excuse anyway). Your driver, however, waited behind again (and not right behind, rather a safe distance back) for two cars coming down the hill to go past before he then overtook me, giving bags of room and either indicating to move back in, or flashing his indicators to acknowledge my wave of thanks (either way it’s nice to see them being used!).

It may be that the driver himself is a cyclist (I know that I drive differently around bikes than many other people I know), but I can safely say it was the best and most patient driving I’ve come across on that hill, and the driver is a credit to the good reputation of your company.

    Regards
    Anthony

  2. It's nice to be nice...

    Dear Anthony

Thank you for your kind words regarding our van driver, he is a very enthusiastic driver and regards the works van as if it was his own taking care of it as much as possible. He has always been a very courteous driver and always makes sure there is plenty of room given to other road users. I will pass on your letter to him and once again thank you.

Well done, that's a nice thing to write (and I wonder how much more effective is the carrot than the stick?)

  5. What I liked was, "... always makes sure there is plenty of room given to other road users" which isn't something limited to cyclists, it isn't making any distinction - all 'road users' are treated the same.

I like the term 'road users' - much better than 'traffic' and simply suggests we're all together using the same resource.

Nice one. Worth doing. I always like it when bus drivers do that wee thumbs up thing when I let them out when I'm driving. I like to think that my wee waves and thumbs up to drivers, often for nothing much, helps grease the wheels. Conversely, I'm regularly dismayed by cyclists not acknowledging each others' existence.
