Is possible, if I continue my gradual earlifying and still have a steerable bike by Friday.
Veilleicht wir können nur ins Deutsch am Stepdoh sprechen, bis geht er zum Köln.
Don't bother with the Imhoff und Stollwerck museum, btw. Apart from the Eostre-egg-making-machine there's nothing special there.

    Vielen Dank.

This'll be my third trip to Cologne, sadly I've mostly seen the inside of the Koelnmesse and Brauhaus Putz

I'll ensure the friday morning I'm there I pop into Kaffchen? for one on the way to work.

and for those of us without code reading facility?

If you're looking for ideas for a trip to Cologne - have you been to the top of the Dom bell tower?

Also, when I was there a few years ago, the big department stores like Galeria Kaufhof had an amazing choice of chocolate, including (for the diabetic person in your life) sugar-free chocolate by all the big German and Swiss makes, Lindt, Ritter Sport, Milka etc. They're not sold in this country.

Last but not least, take a train to Wuppertal and have a ride on the Schwebebahn!

"and for those of us without code reading facility?"

    Good question.

I didn't create that QR code to be 'excluding'.

I suspect half the people on here have 'smartphones' that could read/translate/decipher(?) it. Random guess is that half those have a suitable app, and - again, pure hypothesis - less than half use a QR app.

QR codes are relatively rare in the UK (compared with Japan) but I suspect that their use will increase. Normally it is just a web address, but can be used for larger amounts of text too.

I saw this one recently -

and I'm not sure how close you'd have to be for your 'phone to be able to deal with it!

Whether such codes will be useful or universal is an open question. I have had interesting conversations with people in recent days who had only the vaguest awareness of QR codes but quickly got the idea of how useful they might be as a low cost way of getting messages across - albeit to a minority of people.

It's not that long ago since home internet was unusual and broadband non-existant and "mobile" was about getting around on wheels or feet.

Incidentally this thread doesn't mention where "coffee" is - which isn't about exclusion, but about assumptions and familiarity!

The code above merely translates as -

    http://tinyurl.com/PY-coffee

Which is of course a code too - but easily actioned by anyone with access to a computer.

CC: Im in the lucky position that one of my jobs in Cologne is to take our chef shopping at the food hall at Kaufhof, it's SO nice.

Have one touristique day to may try to do something. It's mainly working, eating and drinking. One of the strangest ones was at Unisicht Bar where you have dinner in pitch black surroundings served by blind people. Memorable experience.

Funny thing is, I've always wanted to go on the Schwebeban since seeing the Tom Tykwer film 'The Princess and the Warrior'. Dusseldorf airport is the closest I've got though :)

In Montepulciano in Tuscany many of the old buildings have QR codes to info about them plus I think there is free wifi. Shame my phone hadn't arrived when we went :<

I think QR codes or something similar will be important. they link physical space to virtual.

"I think QR codes or something similar"

It might well be that something else - 'better' - comes along. Which is fine as long as it doesn't become Betamax v VHS!

    "but you're right"

Perhaps a few words (for those who have never had a CCE/PY moment) about the fun to be had putting names to aliases and admiring/riding some of CCE members' curious mounts.

(Plus a sidebar about the virtues of the coffee and cakes.)

With a footnote about the price.

Other venues are available - but this one has the advantages of being well away from traffic, with an outdoor option and views of commuters whizzing/puffing up/down MMW.

We've pretty much been through this already with things like the Microsoft Tag/HCCB, MaxiCode and some even more obscure.

Good thing is the way of reading these varying systems is pretty much the same, so there's not the same issue with having obsolete kit.

"Depending on the time and location"

Time some time after 7 until about 9 (people come and go) I'm sure someone has noted the time range where the largest number is present.

@chdot, no probs, was just being nosy ;-)
I have now given in and downloaded a code reader to my phone, of course the work system blocks flickr so I can't use it here (sigh), but I'm slowly being dragged into the 21st century, well I will be if I can find the app in amongst the other menus! :-))

If a URL seemed unlikely to be remembered or I don't feel like writing it down I'll sometimes just photograph the text. This approach also works for prices of things in shops for later comparison and assessment or making a note of the water entry positions of various models of shower in B&Q.

I'm now limited to foot-speed until probably Monday (when I'm not at work anyway) so I probably won't make this one.

None of my QR apps can read either of those - no surprise really though some can handle QR and ordinary barcodes as well.

Don't think I'll be searching for apps to read things I've never seen in 'real life'!
