We did a test ride to school. Its at the other end of town (we moved cathchment area but Camie still got in). It took ages as the older child moaned about being tired of riding his bike (which is heavier then mine). Think he'll be walking in future.

I have seen in the past a good site (London focused) where it sets out the current thief-thinking and how to combat it.

eg put your lock with the key hole facing down, stops glue being placed in the lock and sticking. Why would a thief glue the lock? Well your not going to cycle it until you get it cleaned out when you find it. Leave it overnight and don't expect to find it in the morning. The thief comes back at night when he has more time and less observers!

eg 2 - positioning of U'locks tight against frames and stands to avoid simple expansion thingies.

anthony - good chain, was it heavier than the bike? The new bike I have already admired parked under the no bike sign, have you by any chance recently acquired a new bike?

    Nice.

I still think putting drop handlebars on a bike is a big deterrent to thieves

I'm worried that the (slightly waning?) fashion for fixies and increasing popularity of CX bikes might reduce the deterrent-ness of drops. Hopefully mismatched mudguards, odd-coloured cables and a ripped seat lower the apparent value further.

wingpig - I will report any sightings of a fixie in Wester Hailes as that would indicate James and William McBikethief have branched out into drop handlebars. So far I think the resale value of a new mtb (e.g. Kona brand) remains £20. The resale value of a drop handled beauty like anthony's new bike remains nil. There is perhaps another route via e-bay that james and william are not exploring. They love bikes and they go for a fast turnaround so they stick to what they know - mtbs

Pulled up to my usual rack at George square this morning and thought it looked unusually empty. then realised that the Revolution cable lock on the rack had been chopped in half, but left artistically in place. Not nice, especially as the lock was identical to my 'extra' lock.

I do lock there during the day, with a d-lock, but wouldn't leave a bike there over night. Looks like my suspicions were correct!

On way up town last night, I noticed a lot - loads - of bikes chained up all the way down lothian road - i commented to other half that (unless lothian road has changed since I was young) that they were taking a bit of a risk leaving them there on a saturday night - damage as well as theft.

There is a light blue step through framed town bike locked to a signpost on Leith Walk, corner of Brunswick Road, with a single pink cable lock. It is there every time I pass, seems to have been there for months. I wondered quite early on if it had been abandoned (especially one day when it was blown over by the wind and laid on the pavement all day) and was waiting for it to either be stolen or scavenged for parts, like those bike carcasses one sees adorning railings and lamp posts around town. So far, nothing has happened. It's right outside a 'metro' style supermarket, so I wonder if the owner works there? It may be covered by CCTV which is maybe why it hasn't disappeared yet.

The longer it sits there, the more the mystery deepens...

It was still there this morning. You're right, it has been there for quite a while, although I have a vague recollection of it disappearing a few times and returning?

I pass it twice daily on the commute and have been somewhat similarly intrigued...

Yes, it was still there, and the lock has been covered with some stripey material of some sort... The tyres looked under reasonable pressure (from a distance in the rain). I'm guessing someone must own the bike then.
