"An academic study of the trade has found that 88 per cent of black cab drivers in Scotland have experienced verbal or physical abuse and 98 per cent have encountered fare dodging. But among Edinburgh drivers abuse and violence was significantly higher."
"While the study - carried out by Moira Weir, an MSc transport, planning and engineering student at Edinburgh Napier University - was based on a relatively small sample of 75 drivers."
I wonder how many of the sample were Edinburgh cabbies? With that number in the whole sample a 'significantly higher' percentage could amount to one more cabbie!

There were 10,604 licensed taxis in Scotland (plus a further 10,956 private hire cars) in mid-2010 (Scottish Transport Statistics 2010, p 39). Even assuming each taxi has only one driver, I think calling a sample of 0.7% "relatively small" is pretty generous.

Anth - I understand that "midgey" is the preferred technical term...

also if 88% experienced abuse and 98% fare dodgers it would be close call even if all the Edinburgh cabbies experienced 100% abuse and 100% fare dodging to get to significant difference (statistically speaking - 88 % and particularly 98% being more than one and then two deviations from the norm already)
I have nearly always had good experiences with cabbies when discussing bikes or taking my bike usually when it is broken or I am drunk into the cab, but I stipulate when I phone that I am bringing a bike with me.
Cabbies like you if you stress you do not drive and that if you aren't cycling you will be using a cab. [or in my case even if I am cycling but break the bike or break open the tinnies]
