I've lost count of the number of times I've seen drivers do that. So many, I'm almost blasé about it...

Interesting, going to watch through and see if I see myself as one of the 'silly cyclists'!

Ha, ha - that was the first thing I did - (s)he hasn't caught me yet.

Apart from the transition-effect-madness, good stuff. No sign of me.

I'd agree with crowriver - my only solution is to go really wiiiide - right into the middle of the road, to give them a wide berth so as to avoid being hit, and just to keep going. It happens a lot, in my experience - eg last night, I waved - really politely - at someone in a LandRover on the Lanark Road who was sitting right out in the road (blocking the other carriageway) and waiting to turn right, to let them know I was there - their response was to glue their finger to the horn as they did their turn and continue hooting right into the distance. At least they didn't run me down, this time .. To be fair, perhaps people who do that feel they can't see well enough from behind the cycle lane - what do we all think?

I suppose this theory kind of holds where there are parked cars either side in the gutter, obscuring view. But in theory, there shouldn't be parked cars in the red tarmac lane... But of course, this is Edinburgh, where cycle lanes double as car parking bays...

  10. And it's the fault of the cyclists that drivers park in them...

Not had a chance to watch these yet, save one which was complaining about a pedestrian crossing the road while reading a book. I was expecting a blind stumble directly into the bike's path. But. Er. no. Quite a distance ahead - may or may not have checked the way was clear, too far ahead to tell. And walked to the centre where it was clear he was stopping ebcause there was traffic in the other lane that was moving, so he was paying attention.

That kinda made me wonder if some of the videos might have been highlighting stuff that wasn't really that big a deal, or as 'dangerous' as the filmer imagined. Will try and watch some more!

my experience of watching these and others, is that often things that seem dangerous/annoying/stupid in real life don't seem so bad on helmet cam.

the one anth mentions does not look 'exciting' on scren, but yes, reading a book while crossing lothian road (against the lights?). is definitely stooopid.

  12. Even if you've looked and seen the traffic a long way distant and know to stop in the middle? Is it any different to looking, seeing the traffic a long way distant and walking staring straight ahead?

    Posted 13 years ago #
  13. Or to put it another (possibly better) way. If the pedestrian had not been reading a book would that video have been put up? And would it have been commented on as being stupid?

You're spot on that some things in real life don't translate on camera terribly well, but equally I do things every day on the bike that are perfectly safe because I know what I can see and what I've taken notice of, which to a driver looks like I've take some massive risk (filtering then slotting into the traffic as it starts to move for example - been beeped at and remonstrated with about that for it being 'dangerous').

So from the outside crossing like that might look dangerous, but perhaps the pedestrian was perfectly aware of the space and time around him?

  14. Intriguing. Watched a couple more things - a lot are the type of thing you see all the time (not that that makes them okay) but there are occasional odd ones. There's a cyclist who is referred to as 'silly' because he 'races' a bus. He's (the silly cyclist) riding down Shandwick Place passing a stopped bus which pulls out from the stop as he passes. The bus proceeds to go about the same speed as the cyclist so they're alongside each other, the cameracyclist going at the same speed, but behind the bus. The bus gets to the next stop and both cyclists pass it.

I'm not sure why this makes the cyclist silly - it wasn't really racing the bus, but maintaining a speed. Of course that cyclist does then ride onto the pavement to spoil it all.

But the cameracyclist does some odd things. Criticising vans and cars for blocking an ASL, for example, but scooting up a very very narrow space to the left of the traffic to get to the point to see that. And seems to be a bit of a classic gutter-rider at times (not an excuse for the close passes he then suffers, but makes it more likely as we all know).

Intriguing. Makes me want to watch them all! (oh, and one of the cars, a taxi I think, he chastises for being in the ASL is there indicating right, with a green light, and only stopped because of oncoming traffic - perfectly legal).

Not all drivers occupy painted bits of road for a bad reason. In this case it could have been to get a better sight line before completing his turn. Rule is if he looks like he's moving out then you should also move out to take prime position*. Cycle into bit of road he's looking at. Collision averted.

Just work round what's there and don't get angry.

*after checking over shoulder or rear view mirror.

Yup, hard to say from helmet cam vids but nothing I looked at there seemed particularly extreme, normal Edinburgh riding I'd say!
    Didn't see myself either :-(
    (silly or otherwise lol)

I noticed that the number of hits for any clip entitled silly cyclist was approx. three times more than any other hits. Maybe we all clicked on them to check if it was us? I liked the commentary on the one crossing George St South-North Fuh Kinnell

Kinneils was a coffee shop on Victoria St. Once gave me a non-dairy hot chocolate in a wee metal teapot [might have been in my vegan days] 'twas a curious beverage

    Such as:

"Vehicle drivers and pedestrians should film cyclists riding through red lights,; the wrong way down one way streets; on the wrong side of the road; without lights; on pavements and footpaths etc; using mobile phones; with dogs on leads; carrying ladders etc"

Cyclists carrying ladders - WHEN WILL IT STOP?

It's a brave man or woman who sets themselves up as some arbiter of what is/isn't acceptable from fellow road users. We all do silly things from time to time, usually without thinking. Live by the sword and all that.

I don't particularly like the idea of sites like this as I can't really see who benefits and a title such as "dangerousedingburgh" is clearly tabloid style hyperbole - perhaps "dozyedinburgh" or "inconsiderateedinburgh" would be more accurate (and boring).

Also, its a shame to see "cycling in Edinburgh" again portrayed as dangerous - it isn't really.

Correction, there is no longer a website. Or a youtube channel. Looks like the owner has pulled them. Perhaps just until the EEN trolls get bored and move on to something else?

Perhaps they've visited this site, and disliked what has been written.

And further to that, perhaps the individual, who was afforded anonymity by the EEN, quickly realised that the website registration chdot noted wasn't as carefully anonymised.
