What happens when a 37tonne lorry tries to cross one rated for 3 tonnes

    http://m.bucksfreepress.co.uk/news/14767095._Worst_case_scenario__could_see_damaged_bridge_closed_for_up_to_six_months/?ref=twtrec

A bridge that was damaged when a HGV tried to cross it could be closed for up to six months and cost £200,000 to repair.

When it hit the first set of traffic calming measures it blew its tyre out. It then got stuck at the other end of the bridge and had to be towed back off the bridge by police.

White van man at the Polwarth Church lights revving his engine behind me cycling in the gutter as he couldn't overtake because of car ahead waiting to turn right, then failing to resist the urge for a close pass even as I was indicating the imminent left turn. Immediately followed by car giving me exemplary amounts of space whilst overtaking on the bridge, until they saw the approaching speed bumps and suddenly swerved left at speed to avoid them. (I generally find drivers treat those bumps more as an invitation to show off their slalom skills than a traffic calming measure.)

I took primary approaching the pedestrian crossing on Gilmerton Road just south of Good's Corner as I always do. Car behind begins overtake, crosses the centre-line, enters the zig-zags, stays level with me, slows down and stops just before striking the central reservation, the driver throwing up his hands in horror that I've prevented him accumulating three points and a £60 fine.

Caught up with him at the next lights, natch. Stayed well away, though I'm impressed he didn't just side-swipe me out of the way.

IWRATS what would the points and fine be for?

Overtaking on the zigzags of a pedestrian crossing. A colleague got done for it once.

    @fimm

As Stickman says, the function of the zig-zags is to indicate that overtaking is badness of a high order.

    Rule 191

You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.

Of course a bicycle is a carriage, not a vehicle, so who knows, maybe his gambit was legit?

The alternative - plowing through the island - would probably be frowned upon too though.

A long, long time ago I 'made' an automobilist drive into the big polypropylene light bollard thing at the foot of West Mains Road by holding primary away from the lights.

I don't know if he didn't see it or thought driving into it was less humiliating than waiting ten seconds behind me.

Nearly swept off sideways by a van here tonight

The geometry of that roundabout is all kinds of weird.

I hope the driver's 8-9yo son being in the front seat gives him food for thought next time he pulls out without checking right at all

Oh. I thought the ban on overtaking on the approach to a zebra crossing only applied to vehicles that had stopped to let pedestrians cross; i.e. that overtaking a moving cyclist with no pedestrians present was legal (if safe, there is space, blah, blah).
    I stand corrected.

Some really appalling driving yesterday and today. I accept that I am in hyper-critical mode when I have the kids in the trailer or in the seat, but this is enough to dissuade even the likes of me from cycling.

I believe the correct pejorative term on this forum generally revolves around turnips, so I shall refer to these people thus.

I crossed the road pushing my bike across the pedestrian crossing from the Commonwealth pool to Salisbury place. There was nothing around as I got to Salisbury place, so I got on the bike a bit early. A motorcyclist (ASL351T) turning right was annoyed at this apparent transgression and revved up behind us seemingly to scare us, tailgating until I stopped at which point he drove off. I accept that it's a bit cheeky hopping on early there, but you have to join the road somewhere. I caught up with him and may have called him some names, and may have raised my voice somewhat which I regret now, but I had my one-year old on the yepp mini and I was incensed. He told me I was endangering my child, and that he has to take a wide line around that corner on his bike - I was essentially in the gutter behing tailgated by him as I stopped. It doesn't matter how bad you think I was, to endanger me and my one-year old for it does not warrant that response. I hope I see this turnip again some time when I am not with my children.

Taxi 442 took offence to me taking primary (later on) in the left lane heading to the left turn to East Preston street and shouted I should be on the left, and passed us within about 6 inches. Once I have isolated the correct sections of the highway code about not overtaking over junctions etc... he shall be discovering this.

Finally, again with child aboard I filtered out to overtake a parked car in (you've guessed it) the QBiC heading south, and this HGV (click on pic for big version)

closed up to within about a foot of my back wheel, only to join the queue at the red light a few metres further on. I genuinely wasn't sure he was going to slow down, and gesitculated wildly to get him to move back. He may be unaware just how terrifying such a vehicle is.

Many apologies for such a long post - been a really bad day on the roads.

Piosad and I encountered 3 drivers who seemed to believe that right turning cars have priority over strait ahead cyclists. 2 at Kings junction and 1 at Merchiston ave.

    Bah!

  17. Pretty sure I have reported cab 442 to the council before.

Has anyone ever FOI's to get the number of complaints against individual cabs?

Cement mixer driver in Picardy Place using the might-makes-right approach to vehicle control. Yes, no doubt the journey was safe for everyone *in* the cab. The total lack of lane discipline, unpredictable direction, failure to use indicators and disregard for vulnerable road users was not impressive though.

But surely the driver had passed a competency test so has a licence, has insurance and was in a vehicle carrying identification in the form of a registration number?!?!

My first time cycling to work for ages and in the first five minutes I get right hooked by a taxi driver causing me to weigh anchor. The first taxi driver was chancing it a bit, the second saw me and decided to turn anyway.

Two people trying to pass me around my outside as I went west over the zig-zag Seafield bridge yesterday evening, despite not being able to see what might have been coming round the corner. It's almost as if they hadn't noticed the 30mph sign and thought I was stealing a whole eighteen miles an hour from them.

A B&M Coaches coach not helping the blockage around Lady Lawson/West Port a little earlier. Even though it couldn't move forward or turn left it was moved out to the right a couple of feet for no visible reason just as I was going up past it to the advanced stop bit. Photographed its number plate as I walked across on the green man so might complain at the operator later.

The tipper truck is logo'd as 'Frank Bryant'. The VOSA site shows that it's a family business and the Transport Managers (responsible for the safe use of their LGVs) are Frank and Kerry Bryant of 38 RESTALRIG ROAD SOUTH,EDINBURGH,EH7 6LD.

Being a family business they may not be amused by their driver harassing a father and child.

"Being a family business they may not be amused by their driver harassing a father and child."

Being a family business, might be a family member driving...

    Should complain.

If no satisfaction, report to police (you perhaps should anyway.)

They have fifteen lorries on the licence - it'd be some family had that many LGV drivers in it.

Had a bit of a verbal tufty this morning with a lady who I asked, exasperated, to not tailgate me (while in primary, hand out stretched turning right)

Proceeded to continue to drive at me in a car park at which point I lashed out at her mirror.

Not proud and I'm still quite upset at the whole affair.

"at which point I lashed out at her mirror."

Done that a couple of times in the distant past with people driving way too close.

    Broke one.

Friend of mine did that to a close passer on MacDonald Road. He got nicked and done.
