@ejstubbs ... and the fact that they would be driving straight through a green pedestrian signal :(

Back in May I posted this:

Tailgated by a bus driver along Princes Street and into Queensferry Street, including as I crossed the tram tracks.

    Absolutely fed up of this.

I complained to the company, who told me they'd checked the CCTV, which showed that their driver had done nothing wrong and in fact it was my fault. Apparently I had overtaken the bus when it was indicating right, and then failed to indicate when I turned off later.

So I did a subject access request for the CCTV, which showed that I was right. I contacted them again saying this and asked what they were going to do about it.

No response for a month, so I asked again.

No response for two weeks, so I emailed the Chief Operating Officer. COO replied very quickly and I have now been told there was a mixup with my initial complaint and I had apparently been provided feedback for another cyclist's complaint.

Long story short: the company has now apologised and confirmed that the driver is no longer employed by them.

Well done for staying on the case.

and confirmed that the driver is no longer employed by them

Obviously easier for them to say that once drivers no longer employed.

Previously mantra was along the lines of ‘not fair to drivers to say how we deal with disciplinary maters’.

Would be interesting to know if they are prepared to say how many drivers have been dismissed - or perhaps disciplined/retrained - following complaints.

Should help to restore some confidence in LB.

Do they even take ‘driving around cyclists’ seriously any more? They made some impressive training videos a few years ago.

Just for clarity, it wasn't Lothian Buses.

    Ah

    Thanks

Perhaps more significant as some bus cos seem to be worse at handling complaints(?)

The incident happened around 8.50pm on Saturday, 25 October, 2025, on Stenhouse Drive, just west of its junction with Stenhouse Grove, and involved a red Ferrari 488 Spider and a pedestrian.

The chair of BBC Children in Need has resigned just days into the role after he was convicted of careless driving for crashing into a cyclist.

Terence Duddy's BMW knocked a woman off her bike as he turned right on High Street, Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire, on 21 June.

Terence Duddy was driving a BMW when he knocked a woman off her bike

    FTFY, BBC

(still, at least the victim is described as a human being and not some other species like 'cyclist')

Couple of weeks ago now, but I was approaching a red traffic light in the middle lane. There was nobody else in the middle lane, and a car stopped at the lights in the right hand lane. I was turning right, and just as I entered the bike box in front of the stopped car, the driver moved forwards (light was still red) and hit my front wheel.

Some mild swearing (me), a shocked yelp (car passenger) and some profuse apologies (car driver) followed.

No damage or injury and I was in a hurry to get somewhere, so I reminded them to be far more careful in future and headed off when the light turned green.

Reminds me of similar (worse) a week ago.

On Ferry Road going east before Inverleith Row where I was going to turn right.

Was in middle of lane with Trailerbike and 7yo.

Going at pace suitable for the fact there was a slow moving queue ahead also intending to turn right.

When I was about 3 car lengths back a car overtook us and filled the cap.

I pulled alongside and asked the driver if she was ‘some sort of idiot’.

Wasn’t expecting an apology, the response did surprise me - even after all these years.

‘You should be in the cycle lane’

As soon as the traffic started turning the corner she pulled to the left and shot off along F Road.

    Cycling UA through Bruntsfield Ave.
This school access street had ambulance parked in road on emergency. BMW 4x4 couldn't get by so I weaved through narrow space he'd left. Then coming back another car trying to get out (after school drop off?) had gone alongside to block road completely head to head with ambulance. I managed to slip between them. Not sure why they did that? Seems odd to box the ambulance in so he'd have to reverse out last bookshop. Felt there was some annoyance in the air!

Can someone explain why a faulty streetlight is causing drivers to crash on to the pavement? Do headlights not exist? Anything to excuse bad driving.

Looking at streetview it seems far more likely that cornering at too great a speed was the likely cause. Even that's probably being generous, it's actually hard to see how even a moderately competent driver would hit those railings.

Those railings are across from my house. They are replacements for ones that were smashed into when the lights were working.
    THe issue is poor driving.
    It is a wide corner.
It is dark yes but cars have headlights.

I got beeped at by the beepy people again today, coming down the Mound. For having the temerity to ride in the middle of the lane (or "middle of the road" as they would put it).

Yes. The nearest road with a speed limit over 20mph is, I think, the West Approach Road.

I had an encounter with the beepy people in Bruntsfield during the Big Windy Day; I caught up with them at Churchill and asked if they were OK? They returned the question and I clarified that while not immediately obvious if you’re hard of thinking, Big Windy Day make Bikes Go Sidewards, and that they wouldn’t have felt threatened by sudden movements if they learned what a metre was and what one and a half of them is shaped like. They wound up their windae and I left them to stew while I smuggily filtered off down Morningside past about fifty to sixty stationary modern transport conveniences

I didn't encounter the beepy people during Big Windy Day, but drivers possessed of The Four Rings of Privilege and The Four-Bladed Propellor of Privilege had great difficulty understanding that even huge motorbikes go sideways in those conditions, and it is both highly unnerving for the rider and inadvisable for their safety to tailgate them at any speed, particularly above 40mph and especially in the dark.

I had no issues with drivers on Big Windy Day but only had to get from east market streeet to canal then stick to right hand side of the towpath to avoid being blown into the water THe WoL Path was nice and quiet

@chdot no, I was on the bakkyfiets, which is indeed more prone to sideways travel (didn’t have raincover on mind you, which makes such movements a lot worse).

Think the point stands in general though; don’t close pass _especially_ on a Big Windy Day

That counts as a large bike!

Was thinking more about it still being able to filter past all the non-moving motors than any ‘sail effect’

Agree about close passing (at any time).

Likely the same people who have no understanding that it’s even more of an issue when it’s icy/snowy.

It’s the same old unthinking/entitlement/MGIF/etc of some people behind steering wheels…

I chased a driver taking his teenager to George Watson’s. From Gillespies X Road to Slateford He had invited me to get in the cycle lane which I knew was shut from trying to go into it the previous day. I asked him to roll his window down and asked him what he thought of his remarks now that he could see the lane was shut. He said Fair cop Guvnor. Have you never made a mistake? So sometimes I cut some slack unless repeat offending taxi driver but sometimes my zen fails me. No one is perfect

Nowadays I rarely engage verbally with drivers, unless they’re in a bike box and then I generally strike up a conversation about where they got their unusual quike from.

I give a *lot* of raised eyebrows though.

@chdot twas a lot more sheltered from cross-winds after Churchill, and largely speaking Morningside is about the right width to filter and also at enough of a standstill to be able to get past parked cars with the traffic when they’re encountered. Certainly enough progress that I often prefer it to the quiet route given how atrocious the road surface is along significant portions of it (Canaan lane / Woodburn)

    Yes

    I prefer Falcon-Newbattle-Blackford

    Obvs depends on origin/destination

Traffic lights have made a difference to cycling ‘comfort’

Another close encounter on the St Leonards cycle lane/toucan crossing with 2 cars completely ignoring the give way and simultaneously left + right hooking me on my approach to the traffic lights. Given it's one of the few bits of 'proper' cycling infrastructure in Edinburgh I'm loathe to slate it but it seems to cause more problems than it solves? Maybe it's just the fact the average Edinburgh driver doesn't have 2 brain cells to rub together?
