    Driver of a 'DMG Services' white pickup reg DMG 2X was ahead of me through a busy grassmarket around midday. Failed to stop at a zebra crossing for someone about to cross, repeatedly and obviously looking at lap to use mobile phone, and then stopped fully in the bike box as I waited in it to turn right down Lady Lawson St.

    Oooooh weeee he did not take kindly to my patter of 'nice bike' and subsequent pointing out of the bike box. The kind of seething, bile-ridden "see you, you have a nice day pal" that barely masks a coke habit and a tendency to scale lampposts with a saltire to cable tie up there. Looked up their website and it turns out he's the founder, naturally. Still debating whether to review-bomb them on Google Maps.

    As he drove away I shouted "you're not coming to my birthday party". It's only fair he's warned now.

    Is there an FOI we can do to the Places at Festival. Time or whatever they are called.

    I would like to ask

    1 How closed is the Cowgate?
    2. With this man6 cars being driven through the semi-permeable pedestrianism d space in the Cowgate are you not worried there is going to be an accident?
    3. If you are closing a street why cant you close the street?

    This morning I too encountered someone using their mobile phone whilst driving. I managed to remember the colour of the vehicle and the branding on the door, and vague details of the driver, but I was in disguise as a bus passenger so couldn't make out things like registration. Nonetheless I have written to the company to remind them of the law.

    "Festival Streets"?

    I would also ask:
    Are there supposed to be some sort logistics-hub-style arrangements or delivery time restrictions for the loading and unloading of Fringe-related substances and paraphernalia, or were the six different angry psychopaths blocking various sections of Buccleuch Street/Potterow with their diagonally-slewn vehicles last Thursday all following official guidelines?

    Mainly taxis and drivers who ignore the Closed signs as err it isn’t closed, there is one barrier at the Grassmarket end - I watched a car stopped at it but after a cyclist went round it so did the car. Two barriers at the Pleasance end but the guy in the van just moves it to let you through.

    There was one big transit van that was probably delivering theatrical equipment to sneaky Pete’s or other venue. Or maybe just driving through as it isn’t closed.

    Further FOI - how much did you spend on advertising saying the Cowgate is closed when it isn’t closed?

    Possibly the opposite but was up in Banchory seeing the in-laws which is now largely 20mph and....drivers actually follow the speed limits. Going at my usual 23-24mph indicated where I'd have cars behind me so close up my bumper I could see what the driver had for breakfast and I'm pulling away, requiring a minor adjustment to my driving habits.
    A welcome, if slightly unnerving experience. Also when out on the bike on the whole the drivers passed wide and safe, only one close pass of note.

    I drove through Banff, which also has relatively recently-introduced 20 mph speed limits, several times a few weeks ago. I don't think the limits there are being particularly well observed, but I suspect a decent chunk of the people now doing 25/30 were doing 35/40 a year ago.

    RIP, I've heard on the grapevine that of the other 2 cyclists injured one of them is in a bad way :(

    Not that changes the outcome in any way but there doesn't appear to be any discussion as to whether the collision was accidental or deliberate, or whether the driver has/will be charged with anything.

    Ambling on foot down Newbattle Terrace earlier with Mrs Morningsider when a scaffodling wagon passes so close, and at such speed, with horn blazing that an unbidden stream of rule 2s slipped out. The guy continued to barrel down the road, continually honking the horn - all followed by a huge gust of dope smoke (although classic coked up behaviour).

    Possibly the worst driving I have seen in years - the driver was clearly off his nut. Didn't get the reg number, as I got such a fright that he was away before I thought to look.

    A pillock in a nippy wee red car with an unmuffled exhaust going well over thirty in the middle of the road heading east under the bridge just before the Abbey Lane junction seemed an ideal candidate to have "SLOW DOWN" bellowed through his window as he whooshed past. Despite his speed, he couldn't have been in a rush as he found time to turn round, pursue me back along Abbeyhill and ask me if I'd shouted at him ("Yes, I shouted that you should slow down, as you were driving really dangerously") as he pulled abreast just before Croft-an-Righ. As I was on a VOI and therefore limited in agility and speed, I escaped down Croft-an-Righ as I didn't think he'd want to risk his wheels on the lumpy surface and knew there was a bollard where it joins the parade ground, but he didn't follow. Hopefully he scraped his side skirts' paint on some of the speed humps when he headed back eastwards as it looked like he'd been planning on going along Spring Gardens rather than up Abbey Lane.
