CyclingEdin:RT @JohnQuingua: Woah, loads of construction work in #haymarket #edinburgh. It's going to be really congested here for quite sometime.

Suspect that person was on a bus.

Coming back from work via the Roseburn path yesterday (southbound), I followed the diversion signs. It's ok, but I really don't like the crossing of Roseburn Terrace at the bottom of Wester Coates Terrace (to go to Russell Road). It's such a busy road! I don't believe that they didn't put anything in place to the presumably high traffic of bikes having to cross at that point. The other option, which I might use in the future is to stay on the pavement along Roseburn Terrace up to the traffic light in front of Russell Road and cross there when the light is green for pedestrians. I don't want to reopen an old debate, but this bit of pavement is very wide and don't seem to have a lot of pedestrians, so, I would cycle slowly on it for this bit.

Looking at the photos above - why on earth can't they spare a couple of hundred quid from their £1,000,000,000 budget to put some steps up with a gutter channel?
It's no steeper than accessing the canal from the WoL, or indeed the Roseburn from the WoL..!

@CyclingEdin Thank you for your inquiry, I am in the process of passing this on to the correct department to be looked into. Jemma

Hi,
What's the problem with the signage? I cannot say I've noticed anything... I thought that the "corridor" they've put in place along Russell Road is a bit narrow, even for 2 bikes crossing each other, let alone when pedestrians are present. Also, as I mentioned before, the Roseburn Terrace (or is it called Wester Coates?) is a bit chaotic, with cyclists crossing everywhere they can...Posted 13 years ago # -
Is there signage on the cycle path, or do you just go on until you hit the barricades and double-back?
Last weekend, I went into town by road, but came back via Warriston Path* etc and was hoping there would be signage to indicate diversions/exits as I did not know which would be the last one. In the event, it didn't matter, as paths till open. But was surprised to see no indicate of planned closure. Obviously, I knew about it, but you wouldn't have any inkling otherwise.
*How did I manage to live, walk etc down that way for 5 years and never realise there was a pedestrian way over the WoL between Powderhall and Canonmills?

Yes, it might not be very visible, but at the Wester Coates Terrace access point, there is a sign for "Russell Road" to the left and Balbirnie Place straight ahead (I think). But it might not be clear that the path is actually closed... (I'll check when I cycle back)

Why aren't cyclists being directed to go to Russell Road via Balbirnie Place rather than via Wester Coastes Terrace?
That would save having to cross the main road.Posted 13 years ago # -
"I followed the diversion signs. It's ok, but I really don't like the crossing of Roseburn Terrace at the bottom of Wester Coates Terrace (to go to Russell Road)."
I thought that they were leaving Balbirnie exit open - i.e. after bridge.
Slightly longer than crossing from Wester Coates, but much safer.

Cross posting!
Must go and look (going that way at lunchtime anyway).
Posted 13 years ago # -
You're right. Looking at the map, yes it does make sense to use the Balbirnie exit and avoid the Wester Coates crossing!

Did a wee detour on the way home instead of simply turning right into RR.
As gowgowuk found there were cyclists all over the road; one woman pushing her bike up the centre line trying to get into Balbirnie.
Tram works diversion by ccbb7766, on FlickrMuch better to go straight on for Russell Road.
But don't go too far:

Still can't see from your photos why the **** they need to close it in the first place?
Posted 13 years ago # -
"why the **** they need to close it in the first place?"
Simple answer is that they are building a bridge for the tram where that orange digger is.
Subsidiary answer is that they weren't prepared to put steps or zig-zag ramp further north.
BIG question is why they are diverting people down to the north side of the main road rather than over the bridge to Balbirnie.
I don't know the answer but I'm dealing with the photos I took earlier.

I knew you would have lots so I only took a couple...

A few pix from earlier -
Is this still a cycle path?
At first I thought it was shut to bikes too!
Lots of driver had failed to see any of the signs and were turning round.
Official cycle route.
Taken through another fence.
View from Roseburn end
Diversion is up the narrow and steep access. Understandable but less than ideal.
Better access point further up road - http://Edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/to/55.946777,-3.232217/NEPN+access
Coming from the north, and diverted off the path, cyclists are supposed to cross the busy main road. Why pedestrians are directed the other way is a mystery!
THIS is the cause of the problem.
For some reason cyclists heading for Russell Road are being directed down this exit rather than encouraged to cross the bridge and avoid having to cross the main road.
This doesn't help.
The confusion continues.

I rode down that way to get on the path to go down to crammond unsure as to what was going on turned the corner to find a whacking great fence in the way.
Posted 13 years ago # -
thanks for all the photos. that last one kinda sums it up!
am i right in thinking that your suggestion is that cyclists should go over bridge, down to balbirnie, then turn left and join the main road going west, and then take a left onto russell road?
(btw, the link to pdf posted early on no longer works)

"am i right in thinking that your suggestion is that cyclists should go over bridge, down to balbirnie, then turn left and join the main road going west, and then take a left onto russell road?"
Yep.

I cycled from Haymarket yards past that junction tonight. I agree that sending ppl off at the north side and making them negociate the busy road is silly n dangerous. they should send them off at Bilbernie instead and let them ride round the A8 instead.

Thanks for relinking the pdf. Useful now that I have seen it all and the pics. I note that it shows both options for getting to Russell Rd.

"I note that it shows both options for getting to Russell Rd."
Yes but, both ways are logical - in different directions...
Posted 13 years ago # -
Also, this morning, I tried the suggestion of taking the second access to the cycle path on Wester Coates Terrace, further up along the road, and it is definitely easier, less steep ans less narrow. They really should have chosen this one for the directions.
Posted 13 years ago # -
"They really should have chosen this one for the directions."
Well yes. It's really not difficult 'designing for cyclists' - if anyone can be bothered...

I cycled it on Wednesday having been off ill on Monday - stomach, shivers, not fun.
I foumd it OK to ride, they have since added tarmac ramps where needed (just yesterday)Posted 13 years ago # -
Water of Leith path also closed at Baird Drive. Diversion forces the ped/cyclist along Barid Drive, west and south on Balgreen Road. Not the most ideal route now that the south bound carrageway of Balgreen road has bee closed, with traffic lights and single line of traffic going north and south of the North bound carrageway. Sorry no photos.
Can we continue this particular route discustion here:
