Scary. On the descent to Talla apparently (could easily get a very high speed up going down there, and it's not a great road surface). It's the exact route I was planning on riding last week before the wind scuppered that idea - exact same age as me as well.
The Tour of Britain is also going over that way.

Nasty. The surface is horrible, all kind of wavey. Kaputnik and I descended that earlier this year and went down very slowly.

That's awful.

Yes that's terrible news.
And as amir says we went down there on a dampish morning earlier in the year and even with both brakes on pretty hard I wasn't stopping, just slowing. Easily the most scary and hairy descent I've done.

Latest I've heard (Mel workls with someone who knows someone who knows the chap) is that it appears to have been a heart attack rather than a fall. So I assume actually going up the hill.
Heart attack at 35, in someone who (if he's riding up that hill) was presumably fit and healthy, but clearly had an underlying problem, is utterly tragic.

Notice from ERC:
"Many of you will have heard of the tragic death of Dave Stanners at
the weekend.
Dave was taking part in the Peebles CC Sportive on Saturday 3rd
September when he went off the road on the descent from Talla and was
fatally injured.
Dave was a well liked and active member of the club. He was a regular
leader of the Saturday development rides and volunteer helper in other
club events. Dave will be missed by the many club riders he came into
contact with on the Saturday morning rides, at the Kirky 10's and the
many other ERC events he took part in.
Our sincere condolences go to his family at this difficult time.*Funeral notice and details:*
David Stanners funeral is to be held on Saturday 10th September 2011
There is to be a memorial service at 9am in St Mary's Star of the Sea
( 106 Constitution Street, Leith, EH6 6AW ) followed by the funeral at
Warriston Crematorium ( EH7 4HW ) at 10amThe family welcome David's friends from the club and were more than
happy for any cyclists attending to wear cycling kit.Cliff White will be riding to both of the services and requests that
anyone wanting to ride down with him meet at 8.30am on Princes Street
opposite the front entrance of the Balmoral Hotel. As the bikes are
likely to be unattended at the services, it would be sensible to bring
a lock.As a mark of respect the Lammermuirs RR scheduled for that day will be
postponed."Posted 13 years ago #
