This one is my favourite, he is being serious for a change. if you persevere until the gorbals footage stops and the song comes on you get a very good clip of a cycling chap dicing with death between trams on sauchiehall street

I liked this bit the best:

    "
One Portobello resident, who asked not to be named, said: “The noise was deafening. It sounded like something terrible was going to happen – not for a minute did I think it would be for the Tattoo.

“Surely the organisers would have the sense to properly announce something like this, especially with the Olympics terror alerts?”
    "

Perhaps the council could sound klaxons, and send vans round with loud-hailer announcements 10 minutes beforehand?

  5. Talk Porty has been most scathing about these complaints. I emailed the Tattoo people to voice my displeasure at a small band managing to spoil the entertainment of others - the flypast goes virtually over our house, lower than it would be over Porty, and the walls most certainly don't shake.

As for someone saying they thought it was a plane about to ditch in the sea, well now they know it's not then surely that worry is assuaged?

"small band managing to spoil the entertainment of others"

    Aye, that's life...

However - I'm a bit surprised RAF would reduce planes from 4 to 1 so quickly (and not change route).

    So maybe some half truths(?)

  8. Oh most certainly, there will be some element that's not covered in the EEN piece.

I don't understand why people who are disturbed by the noise should not complain if they are so inclined. Some people appear to like loud noises - Clakson types revving their cars, motor bike riders,... ,however, many people do not. I hate being out in the countryside, quietly walking along, to have 2 jets go screeching past. The Red Arrows flying over Edin prior to the Olympics opening ceremony scared the begeesus out of me!

Is this not 'a small band of people' disturbing everybody else to have their fun?

The answer is that this is a burst of sound for a couple of seconds, once a day for a couple of weeks a year. If you begrudge that then I suspect most people would classify this as a killjoy attitude.

Noise is a part of life. Last week I was startled by someone using an angle grinder as I walked past their garden. The occasional thunderstorm can make me jump. To whom should I complain?
If the noise is persitent or frequent then I agree it is acceptable to complain, but to moan about the tattoo display implies that some people do not have enough joy in their lives.
Incidentally, the report is a typical EEN peice: The 4 plane formation is only progammed once or twice. The singleton is the norm, so I suspect this is not the result of a noise complaint.

Noise is part of life. For some reason I love thunder - it is a much more pleasant sound to me than the screech of a jet. However, unnecessary noise seems unnecessary to me - isn't that what these 'burners' are?.

It wasn't me who complained, it just seemed to me that whoever they were, they had reasonable entitlement to do so.

I'm also not entirely convinced that even if most people would classify this as a killjoy attitude, that should have much sway. I suspect most people think bicycles should not be on the roads! I have a feeling that noise 'pollution' will become more of an issue in the near future.

It is necessary in as much as it is part of a show people enjoy going to see. The key thing isn't the utility of the offending source of noise, but how much disruption it causes. & in this case I'd say... not much.

Jets x 2 tonight, it must have been panic on the streets of Porty..... those poor people!!

  14. Trust me, I've got very very painful experience of the detrimental effect of noise on life. Ended up moving house because of it in the end.

What I think grates about this tale is that it seems like a small and vocal minority holds sway. Perhaps that's not actually the case, but while I know these jets are a bit noisy they are very very much toned down compared to, say, going to an air show. The jets are lower over my house than they would be over Porty, and they walls here didn't 'shake' (that's not a differing opinion on noise levels, that's a basic factual 'walls shaking' thing). And the burners only go on to pass over the Castle, so that's not an issue over Porty either...

p.s. ExcitableBoy, you might want to check out the wildlife thread.

I didn't want to get into an argument about this, whilst I am no fan of noisy jets, I don't feel so strongly as to complain. It just seemed to me, those complaining were being mocked a little unfairly.

It would be nice to be part of a minority who did hold sway - how do they manage that? Oh, to be a taxi driver ;-) I know I'm not a glass half full/empty person, more a might-as-well-be-empty sort of guy, but the lack of action on POP proposals and Leith Walk etc makes me feel that a more direct action approach is required.

Also WC, I saw your impressive photo of the otter - very envious!

Given the ranter on the Evening News story today about building bike trails in East Lothian, the no cycling signs haven't been removed yet.

When I read those ranters comments I always imagine them as Mr Creosote from that monty python sketch.

Back on topic (and a year after this one was started) -

Today Leslie Hinds was made aware that the 'new' signs hadn't been put in place.

She seemed a bit surprised, and is now on the case.

    So 24.9.12 - and counting.

Well, it took eight or so years for them to bring the Meadows signage inline with the Land Reform Act, so a year isn't much of a delay yet...

Cycling on the Prom is on the agenda for Monday's meeting (30th); here's some background: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1rsAumKohqK5DhkuRSxQTdYOXE00oJPf1wpJVKVq1AWY/pub?start=true&loop=false&delayms=10000 @east_team @SpokesLothian

Seems to be a very reasonable evidence based presentation with no knee jerk fearmongering.

Good caveated use of Strava data. I wonder if a more granular data set (am/pm, summer/winter) is available through subscriptions or if this is the subscription data.

Fundamental problem is still lack of safe route on the High St meaning all but the boldest will gravitate to the prom. Just as in the west a lack of safe route on Colinton and Slateford Roads means cyclists naturally gravitate to the route of least resistance, the canal.

Suspect a lot of this will be going on in London adjacent to the new protected cycleways just now with people detouring onto a longer route to use them.

I use the prom a lot. I try to avoid the busiest times, and often detour off when it is too busy.
Unfortunately Monday's are late finishes for me so I can't go to this. Anyone else going?

@Klaxon - the graphs were put together by tk, of this forum, on an earlier thread: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=13089

That presentation does seem very measured. Presumably an ideal solution is still better shared space signage and /entry/exit points on prom (I still can' figure out how you're supposed to navigate the turn off near the glass kilns towards High Street to head on towards Fishwives Causeway - it's thoroughly confusing and takes me onto the pavement then off a high kerb every time I try), plus a safer direct route along the High Street for those in need of speed?

If you turn off the prom between the new flats and Tumbles' car park then there's a dropped kerb onto Bridge St five metres away back towards the kilns, which I use when stuffed with rattly shopping or carrying a child.

And the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has recommended that swimming in Portobello West – the stretch between the Seafield sewage works and Tumbles play centre – is avoided for up to two days after heavy rainfall because of the risk of illness

NOT just because of Seafield - this is where the Braid/Figgate Burn outflow is and direct surface run off into streams is also a big contaminant.

So problem east of Tumbles too.

I had assumed that somehow Seafield managed to cope with 'storm water' in the sewers, but suppose that's 'impossible'(?)

  30. So any reports? No chance I could get down there last night.
