Open from Waverly bridge east (I haven't been along to the other end) and they have reopened the St Andrew Sq link to Princes St opp Waverly Market.

It is worth noting also that west end, west bound is a mess that i can't actually describe. I will try though...

If you come out of Charlotte Square next to o2 and the Game Shop, you are turned right onto the East bound lanes that are now bollarded and fenced into one lane West only. Please bear in mind there are poor markings and the surface is rubbish.

There is also a stupid funnel effect that you will need to take care over with buses and the like. Recommend staying well back or filtering to the front if there is time - i,e, next to Frasers.

You cannot take a left up Lothian Road and so must either dismount or carry in Shandwick Place to Canning Street area or similar.

It is a monumentally amazing example of 'OMGWTF are they doing' traffic management that i cannot wait to see it at a busy time. I negiotiated it on Saturday 6.30pm so was reasonably quiet, although pedestrians are confused as well and wandering like the undead.

    Understatement!

"You cannot take a left up Lothian Road"

As in 'you are not supposed to'.

I was there on Saturday and followed a taxi! Didn't seem to go through any pedestrian phases.

"although pedestrians are confused as well and wandering like the undead."

Yesterday I saw a women walking from the east side of Lothian Road towards the north side of PS. She was obviously so shocked to find a bus coming almost straight at her that she turned round and walked back.

From a bus-travelling colleague today: it apparently took fifteen minutes to get from the top of Leith Street to St Andrew's Square. They'll try a York Place-routed bus tomorrow. I'd have mentioned walking, but this is someone who drives from a couple of hundred metres from my house to a point less than a mile along my route to catch a bus to go 2½ miles.

There was a bit of extra traffic waiting to turn into Lothian Road from Castle Terrace this morning but nothing which can't be easily sneaked past when it's held by a light which is only green for ten seconds every few minutes.

I elected to go Meadows, MMW, Chamber st, Bridges, leith St today to avoid that area.

There was an impressive array of Carrera 4s cars today in town for some reason all travelling at a gentlemanly 15mph in traffic jams. REALLY stressing the german engineering!

Yesterday afternoon after haring down Lothian Road I had to go three-quarters of the way around Charlotte Square, acknowledging the bike messengers as I went, winkling past a bus and a taxi, and nearly found myself heading back to the West End! I sidestepped left through the cones to find a rather nice traffic free lane that seemed to stretch all the way to Hanover Street or more.

After buying books in Waterstone's and later watching three hi-viz guys trying to break their expensive tarmac-chewing machine, and pottering as far as the Mound, I turned around to try the West End exit. Fortunately there weren't any vehicles behind me as I pulled up at the red light and waited for ages. I actually circled around a little because I wasn't sure if I was waiting in the correct place! Eventually the green came, followed very shortly after by the green for the Lothian Road > Shandwick Place traffic. I was heading for Dalry anyway which made my manoeuvre a bit easier, but I was barely into Shandwick before the Lothian Rd traffic moved, which for a moment made me think I'd somehow gone through a red light somewhere because I certainly wasn't taking my time.

It's a bit odd, riding east along the Princes Street cycle expressway and wondering whether to stop at the red lights en route, even though there's no junction traffic for them to manage, just an occasional eastbound cyclist or pedestrian.

I saw a few people do exactly this when I was waiting at the lights for Shandwick Place. They'd crossed from the south side and suddenly found barriers in front of them and no obvious way around, other than perhaps performing a gate vault.

Jeepers, East Princes St is a breeze in comparison. All traffic at Waverly heading north turns east. They have re opened the south east entry to St Andrew Sq, and closed the south west access. North East still closed so traffic enters St Andrew Sq at the north west access as per... I chose to cycle in along the north Edinburgh Sub line (I'm sure Kaputnic or anth will correct me on its proper name), and up past thebikechain to work at Mulltrees Walk. No exta traffic or hassles.

    north Edinburgh Sub line

The full Sunday name of the "sub" is the Edinburgh Suburban & Southside Junction Railway and it runs from junctions to the west of Haymarket, through the 'burbs to Niddrie West. It is still in use as a diversionary and freight-only line. Hence you wouldn't have been cycling in on that.

The lines to the north of the city centre have various historic names and were 2 different (Caledonian and North British) Railway networks - although some of them predate those companies. If you came in from Fifeshire to TBC at Rodney Street you will have run (if you took the obvious route!) variously along the Caledonian's Barnton Branch to Barnton Junction, turning onto the Granton Branch and heading north. At Crew Junction (not "Crewe", to avoid confusion with that other Crewe of the railway world) you will have turned onto the Leith North Branch (not to be confused with the North Leith Branch!). At "fiveways junction" (not a junction at all, but a crossover) you will have made the magic leap onto the North British's Edinburgh Leith and Newhaven Railway, through Trinity Junction, through Warriston Junction and then through the Rodney Street tunnel and into the site of Scotland Street station. From there you left the railway network...

    Simple, huh?

EDIT, this forum is turning into a Rail Forum.

I can recommend Alexander MacLean's "Edinburgh Suburban and Southside Junction Railway", if you fancy too much information about the station geraniums and the iterations of the panelling of the shelters, and where the clock used to be and when railings were converted from wood to metal, etc.
