I cycle in from the 5 ways junction south to Broughton, and up into town. I've noticed that there are a number of plant vehicals and cranes along the south bank of the Water of Leith. Can anyone say what this work is for?
Cheers,

IT’S TRUE!

Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Yes it's for flood creation prevention.
Yes it does look like they are trying to prevent floods by making the course of the river half as narrow as it was...
But I'm no hydrological engineer. So what do I know? :)
Hmm wonder if they could put some hard standing on top to provide some sort of cycle path?
The only upshot of what they're doing that I can see is that by narrowing the channel they'll create faster flow with less silt deposition, especially on the inside of the bend, offsetting the dumping of the alluvium until the flow slows again further down. I suppose it depends where they're trying to prevent flooding - perhaps they're sacrificing Broughton and Leith in order to save Stockbridge or something.
They are trying to save rugby pitches at Murrayfield (I think - wherever training grounds are), these are more important than peoples homes and businesses. Last time it rained a bit I was close to accidentally shoving my face in the water when I popped my head over the wall to have a look at the water level it was that high.
Wow Min, I'm assuming you weren't on the bridge over the WoL from Tesco..... eek!!
Haha, no I was on the road at Boat Green!

Well quite.
This is Stockbridge. It's hard to tell what they are trying to do.
I remember when they cut back the nice willows near Ford's Road.
I was told that it (and the planned dredging) was for "flood prevention". Dredging never happened and the trees have grown back to hold the riverbank together.
