"A woman has died and a man has been seriously injured after the two cyclists were involved in an accident with a car on the A99 in the far north."

Ouch. More or less perfect cycling road, too :(

    Very sad.

Alas quiet, fairly straight roads like this appeal to speeding and reckless drivers too.

If a person with epilepsy has a fit, they are not allowed to drive for 6 mo (or something). How is it that this old lady who had a blackout a month before is allowed behind the wheel?

Because doctors and family members misjudge the balance between removing someone's car, which would make them more or less housebound and dependent on family members, friends, neighbours, social services etc and the potential consequences of allowing them to continue to drive.

Those who hold a vocational licence to drive (Class C, D, and E), MUST after their 45th birthday take a medical every 5 years in order to retain their licence, and at age 65 this reduces to an annual medical and licence renewal process.

So DVLA already has in place the mechanism to deliver viz:

    When you reach 45 ....

You’ll get 2 forms from DVLA 56 days before your driving licence runs out:

an ‘application for renewal of lorry and bus entitlement’ (D47P)
    and
a ‘medical examination report’ form (D4)

Surely it cannot be beyond the wit of the civil service to initiate a similar scheme for those holding Class B (and pre 1997 Classes C1 D1 and E1) they could even use form D4 directly for the medical report.

To start the scheme gently I'd suggest that it sets a slightly higher age limit - say 75, as this should keep the initial numbers down.

BBC report based on Sheriff's determination "A driver in her 90s suffering a blackout was the "most likely" cause of a crash in Caithness that killed a cyclist from Leicestershire"

    full report from Court
