Reported to Clarence, Thursday 22/12/2011:
There is a large, deep pothole on the approximate centre line of Oxgangs Road North, a few metres north of the junction with Redford Road. The hole appeared to be a few inches deep and perhaps 18 inches across. Its position makes it unlikely to be a hazard to cyclists, but the suspension of vehicles turning right into Redford Road might well be taking a battering.

I've just ridden form work to Stockbridge and back - I could keep Clarence going for the whole of 2012 on that short loop alone...

I started trying to mentally note all the sinkholes that have appeared under bus wheel stopping points on Bankhead - Broomhouse - Stenhouse route other day. Had to give up pretty quickly and think "i need to come back with camera and GPS to log these".

I'm beginning to wonder if this should be a regular thing. I'm thinking of once or twice a month leaving the house early, or going for a ride after work, to cover one particular area, and note all of the potholes and so on, then report them to Clarence, as well as FillThatHole and FixMyStreet.
The reason for doing so is simply so that the council is aware of them, which can have two main benefits:
Firstly, it might get the hole filled, huzzah; and/or
Secondly, in the event of someone hitting a pothole, such as custard the other day, it can be shown to have been reported before.

I had an idea for an app that would record shocks and your gps position, with a little calibration it would perfect for locating pot holes that you hadn't managed to ride round. The real killers would however remain unreported.

@steveo - that would require cycling through the pothole though!! How about one that detects life-saving swerves? ;)

I don't think GPS is sensitive enough, I wonder if the compass would work.....
Posted 12 years ago # -
Smartphones have mult-axis accelerometers to detect which way up they are I think?
Posted 12 years ago # -
For automatic detection from cars driving through, rather than bikes changing direction to avoid, potholes there are some ideas already on trial. http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-02/bostons-street-bump-app-will-use-accelerometers-gps-automatically-log-pothole-complaints

If I ever get round to poking at the Android App Builder I was going to see if there was a way of getting it to log a GPS location every time you triple-tapped the phone in your pocket, to avoid having to stop and make a manual note of every reportable pothole or attempt to remember them all until next in a position to report them.

would it be possible to say program and app to log a tap on a bluetooth earpiece?
thinking you could haeve the earpiece on the handlebar, linked to the phone and hit the talk button at a pothole location
app logs that and GPS dataI have no idea if thats possible :o

Neither do I, but if it is that's a genius solution...
Posted 12 years ago # -
I'm sure it would be possible.
Problem will always we be GPS accuracy.
If pothole (etc.) is 'serious' best to stop and take a photo and upload report later.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Accuracy wouldn't be too vital, as long as there was enough to remind you of the rough whereabouts of what you'd thought was notable to trigger the memory of that bit of route.
Posted 12 years ago # -
If it could be voice activated - you could just chose a suitable expletive (like 'sugar').

"as long as there was enough to remind you of the rough whereabouts of what you'd thought was notable to trigger the memory"
That's why I take photos...

Reported to Clarence, Monday 09/01/2012:
Three road defects northbound on Craigmillar Park, just before the junction with Wilton Road.
Defect 1 is a hole in the centre of the northbound carriageway and is roughly 2.5 feet wide, 2.5 feet long, and at least 5 inches deep with a staggered outline. If you're in primary at this position, be very careful because it will eat your wheel.
Defect 2 is a developing hole close to the kerb and about opposite the pedestrian refuge, and about 2 feet wide and 1 foot long.
Defect 3 is an area of cracking tarmac and subsidence near the drain cover right before Wilton Road. It's currently about 2 feet wide and 3 feet long.

@wingpig, yep and they have been developing, started off last October as one small dip and getting bigger and bigger with about three or four all joined up now and getting deeper too. You have to move right out just when cars are going to try and overtake you, which they do, right on the corner. I know they are there and take a positive line causing cars to stay behind me whilst I negotiate them.

Just been out on a pothole checking exercise this evening.
The Oxgangs Road North pothole has been filled.
The three defects on Craigmillar Park have been mended. In fact, CEC has done an excellent job and resurfaced the entire area, and sealed it well.
The Peffermill section was emergency filled a while ago, and - please correct me if I'm wrong, because it was dark - the section looks like it has now been resurfaced. The subsiding air valve cover area hasn't been attended to though.
