Stick the issues you've reported to Clarence

    Admin edit

    Link changed -

    https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/forms/form/21/en/report_a_street_lighting_problem

(either directly or via FixMyStreet) here, perhaps so that people who pass the problem area more regularly can keep an eye out for the issue's resolution.

    Reported Sunday 11/09/2011:
The traffic light vehicle-detectors at the Crew(e) Toll end of West Granton Access ignore lone cyclists. I tied directing my lights' beams at the light-top cameras and laying the bike down sideways to no avail (through three cycles of the east-west lights) before a car pulled up, resulting in detection and escape.
FixMyStreet-ed rather than Clarenced directly as it has resulted in swifter callbacks in the past. Not had a chance yet to try it again at night when there's no other traffic to see if it's been fixed.

    Reported sometime in March 2011:
Similar problem at the not-roundabout junction of King's Road, Portobello Road, Seafield Road, Harry Lauder and Portobello High Street. I was attempting to exit King's Road and head up Portobello Road (or possibly Harry Lauder) but the light refused to acknowledge my presence, despite similar plaintive attention-getting attempts. I previously had (and reported) a similar problem leaving Portobello High Street for Seafield Road, though even at night it's not long before a car arrives going the same way.

I reported this 3 weeks ago and it got barriered off yesterday.

I believe various people pass every day so will notice 'action'.

    Reported in July 2011:
Cobbles heading west along Eyre Place, just before the junction with Dundas Street - the cobbles on what would be the normal cycling line (approx the line of a car's left tyre track) were in a shocking state. They were always been pretty bad (presumably from bus use) but at some point in the "summer" months they became very disturbed and there were gaps of a couple of inches between some of them.

"Fixed" by the start of September by the means of dumping some tarmac on top of the offending cobbles. Sorts the immediate danger issue, but surely not a good solution from CEC's streetscape point of view?

    Reported Monday 23/10/2011
Huge pothole next to the Longstone Park bus stop, which was reported (not by me) and soon filled in, about two weeks ago, with standard tar. It's collapsing under the weight of buses as they stop for passengers and was full of rainwater today, so probably needs excavating, filling and sealing.

Copied in from previous posting: http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=4042

After my partial success in writing to the Neighbourhood Partnership manager I would suggest that this might be a mre direct and possibly fruitful way of reporting potholes and obvious road/cycling hazards. Here are the contact details:

    Almond & West
    Natalie Hoy
    West Neighbourhood Manager
    0131 469 5198

    Leith & City Centre
    Mike Penny
    City Centre Neighbourhood Manager
    0131 529 7766

    Forth & Inverleith
    Peter Strong
    North Neighbourhood Manager
    0131 529 5005

    South & Liberton & Gilmerton – Craigentinny & Duddingston
    Sarah Burns
    South Neighbourhood Manager
    0131 529 7662

    Pentlands & South West
    Mike Avery
    South West Neighbourhood Manager
    0131 527 3801

    Portobello and Craigmillar -
    Jim Hunter
    East Neighbourhood Manager
    0131 529 7185

All these staff can be contacted directly by addressing the emails to first name dot second name@edinburgh.gov.uk.

Clearly stating that there is a hazard, and in my instance, providing a photo meant that they sent out someone to fill in the first pothole with some tar. The secound one is a collaped drain and I am supposing that it is more difficult/costly to repair. I am monitoring the second one and will drop Mike Penny another email shortly.

FixMyStreeted on Wednesday 11/10/2011. The traffic light controlling exit from Marionville Road/Meadowbank to London Road westbound has been twsisted round so that it points up London Road. Noticed it on the way home yesterday but forgot until this morning.

Traffic light above fixed this morning.

FixMyStreeted on Thursday 13/10/2011: there's a ginormous sinkhole-crater forming on Home Street (northbound side) just past (I think) the junction with Lochrin Place.

Sinkhole (badly) fixed by the morning of Friday 14/10/2011.

FixMyStreeted this morning, but Clarenced more than once in the past: the right-turn filter light to escape to Canning Street from the West Approach Road (heading west) doesn't detect cyclists. Cyclists are not allowed any further west, so really shouldn't be overlooked by these lights.

Oh, huge bike gobbler hole on the downward stretch towards Western Corner, I must report.

Wingpig, I've had problems before with that right-turn filter to Canning St. I once sat through an entire cycle of the lights at the junction without getting a green.

Longstone Rd pothole was even larger this morning, but Clarence the Lion is aware now. Not sure how I managed to report it two weeks into the future, though.

I usually try to photograph a reportable pothole with my water bottle in the picture for scale.

Longstone Rd pothole is now filled and surfaced with tar, but is not sealed with cold pour or surfaced in asphalt, so may be another temporary fix.

FixMyStreeted on Monday 24/10/2011: rip in the fabric of Bruntsfield Place, just out from the end of Whitehouse Loan. Not directly in the ideal cycling-line heading south but could be if you were thinking of swinging left a bit to let an impatient heavy something thunder past.

The council workers have been busy this weekend.

Noticed a whole series of fixes from Leith Street all the way down to the foot of Leith Walk.

Leith Walk is still treacherous in parts but it's a commendable effort by CEC all the same.

Progress on the Comiston Road pothole today is unchanged from chdot's last report. Still surrounded by orange barriers, the plywood sheets covering the crater have collapsed, and the thing is collecting dead leaves.

    21st November

One of the "road block" flower planters at bottom of Meadow Place has been tipped onto the road. The resulting pile of earth is in the cycle lane and has been compressed by passing vehicles into a slidy, compacted obstruction, just at the pedestrian crossing. Judging by the size of it, I imagine a vehicle may have reversed into it - it wouldn't be that easy to tip over by hand.

It's been like that since Friday or Saturday, but seeing as it was still there this morning I have reported.

    Posted 13 years ago #
  17. Hmmm, I saw that on Friday and just assumed it would get dealt with as it was so obvious - but I guess if no-one reports it (I was walking, so didn't have to navigate past it).

    its unbelievable its still there.
    on a side note
I saw 2 police motorbikes at the tram works on Stenhouse drive/broomhouse yesterday
road was covered in mud and they were(i assume) going in to tell them to clean the road
4 hours later the road had a cleaner lorry going up and down it.
i had wondered if one of them had beenin a slide on the mud

The Comiston Road pothole has now been repaired. On Saturday past, the covering plywood sheets had been disturbed slightly, revealing the edge of a huge excavated hole that was presumably to rectify the subsidence. The site was still enclosed with orange barriers this evening but should be back in action soon.

There have been various discussions on CCE about whether or not reporting 'problems' to Clarence is the best thing to do - also best way to work out where an 'issue' is.

CEC has now made it VERY easy (not sure how long THIS PAGE has been on the web site.)

Very detailed zoomable map (works on iPhone too - don't know about other mobile platforms).

On Desktops (and perhaps mobiles with Flash??) you can drag a pin to an exact spot and find out "What neighbourhood area? What ward am I in? Neighbourhood partnership? What community council?"

For instance (which is why I was looking) the DRW to Tunnel bit of The Innocent is in South Central and these are its councillors (inc. Gordon Mackenzie - 'in charge' of Transport.)

    yes, much improved.

(but would it not be cool to be able to also drag a pin and then report an issue right there and then?! )

Yes - perhaps CEC decided not to...

Both King's Road and West Approach Road non-cycle-detecting traffic-lights now appear to detect lone cycles, though I wonder if being on the steel-framed sparebike made a difference to the West Approach Road one yesterday... marking as fixed, anyway.
